March of Dimes Challenged to Drop Animal Experiments

Throughout April, many PCRM members joined our campaign to reform health charities by leafleting at WalkAmerica events, the March of Dimes' largest annual fundraiser. Activists in nearly 100 cities informed WalkAmerica participants and the public at large that the March of Dimes continues to allocate a portion of charity dollars toward animal experiments that can hinder progress and take the focus away from more relevant human population studies.

Overall, the volunteers' efforts were met with appreciation and interest. Many walkers were eager to receive flyers bearing a photo of longtime animal protection advocate Paul McCartney and to learn more about supporting humane research methods. Airplane banners flew over events in Denver, San Francisco, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Rockville, Md. In addition, PCRM billboards in San Francisco, San Diego, and Dallas, urging the March of Dimes to stop funding animal experiments.

Point, Click, Get Involved!

The newest phase of PCRM's campaign to reform the March of Dimes focuses attention on some of their biggest sponsors. As a consumer, your voice is a powerful tool, and we encourage you to use it by asking March of Dimes sponsors to give their support to other charitable organizations. Go to www.charitiesinfo.org, click on "Reform Research Charities," and you will find a petition you can present to March of Dimes company sponsors you may work for or patronize. It is also helpful to talk with small businesses in your area about the charities they support and to educate them about the choices they have. Please send a copy of the signed petition to us after you have presented the original to the sponsor.
