PCRM Helps Improve D.C. School Nutrition
The Council of the District of Columbia has passed what may be the strongest measure passed by any jurisdiction in the battle against childhood obesity. In May, the council passed the D.C. Healthy Schools Act, raising nutritional standards, bringing affordable, healthy food to low-income neighborhoods, encouraging vegetarian options, and increasing health education and physical activity. The council felt it had no choice. Nearly half the city’s children are overweight or obese.
PCRM dietitian Kathryn Strong, M.S., R.D., worked with D.C. council members on the nutrition aspects of this bill.
