herpes simplex/L-Lysine
Posted Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 10:42 AM

I have had herpes simplex (mouth) since I was a kid. I'm not sure if my increase in symptoms has to do with my changed diet. I started taking 500 mg L-Lysine last week because of another outbreak. Now I am taking one tablet every other day and crossing my fingers.

I am a big fan of walnuts. One of Dr. Barnard's books says that arginine (found in the walnuts I love) is bad for herpes. Are other kinds of nuts bad? Are there veggies I should limit also? Eggplant?

It may be that when I switched to vegan I accidently increased my arginine intake!

Actually, arginine is quite high in dairy products, fish, meat, seeds, and nuts. It's very low in frutis and vegetables. Beans and grains vary. Basically, any food with high protein content will likely have high arginine levels.

Are there foods with higher lysine content that I should eat more? Or, because of the herpes, should I just stick with the supplements?

I would stick with the supplement for now, especially if you think it is working. It won't hurt you. Of course, the foods with lysine content are also the foods with arginine content. Protein food sources have all the amino acids only in varying amounts. You could do some detailed research to see which foods lean more in the favor of lysine than arginine. For example, lima beans have more lysine and less arginine than walnuts.

I used to get these periodically.. stress .. But then i found if EVERY SINGLE TIME I went outside I put a sunscreen on my lips... no more outbreaks!! it went from about 4-5 a year to 1x in 2 years.
I don't like chapstick. it leaves white on the lips.. try others. There are two i found at Rite Aid. One is their brand w/an spf of 30. Another one was an off brand with an spf of 45. Now i can kiss my honey more!!
