Hello! Welcome to the Kickstart Forum. For some of you, it's old hat - I refer to you as my KickSmart team around the office. You play a crucial role in managing this forum, and I thank you again and again.

For the first timers, you are in for a treat. We love giving advice and tips and sharing our own stories. Glad you are here. I think the forum really makes the Kickstart!

Let's get ready to feel even healthier!

Here we go again.....woo hoo. I hope we pick up a lot of new people adapting the vegan diet.

The vegan Kickstart really helped me put it into perspective way back in 2009 and I healthier & happier for it.

Hi Susan and fellow veganites

I am glad to be here again. I have remained 99% vegan since the January kickstart program (I can't claim 100% as a few slip ups). Those I met in January will know I have been vegetarian for the past 15+ years but have only switched to vegan since finding this kickstart. Now I have a 'handle' on vegan foods I am planning to concentrate on the low fat part and maybe, hopefully, loose some weight as part of the getting healthy/staying healthy long term goal.

I am really looking forward to this kickstart as I found my first educational, motivational, inspirational and best of all, fun.

Glad to be back! I'm concentrating on more whole foods, less convenience foods. I still have about 15 pounds I would like to eliminate.

I am happy to be back for my 3rd kickstart. Since September, 2010 I have been eating a plant based diet. That kickstart helped me finally give up the dairy that I had had such a hard time kicking.

This time around I will focus on eating more whole foods and also more raw fruits and veggies. I slipped into a habit of eating lots of cooked frozen veggies during the winter, but now that the sun is shining a bit more, it's time to explore more salads and raw veggie dishes.

Looking forward to talking to you all!

Hi everyone and welcome!

I am so happy to be continuing on this journey! Someone said in the last forum they made a commitment to eat this way for one year! I thought how smart and I said I'm going to do the same. A little inspiration for everyone trying this for the first time. I've lost 32 pounds since Jan. 1 of this year and have never felt better in my life! Good luck to all!

Hi Everyone!

I am so excited to get started!! I did the Clean Program first of the year, but I am ready for more of a Vegan plan. I have made the choice to become Vegan for lots of reasons, mainly health I am a Stage III Colo/Rectal Survivor and I have a Colostomy and I also read The Kind Diet and where Alicia talks about looking at your dog and could you eat your dog NO WAY, that hit home for me! Have my Colostomy is challenging because some food items just don't sit right with an ostomy, are there any ostomates here?

Also I am going out of town this weekend and get back LATE Sunday night. I printed off the grocery list and have most of the items but when will the menu for week one be posted?

Blessings,

Liz Smile

Don't worry too much about it - if you need to swap Tuesday's meals for Monday and vice versa until you get some ingredient(s), that's fine. If you need to swap out black beans for lentils because lentils are easier on your ostomy situation, not a problem. Or, if you need to back off slightly on the dark greens because of vitamin K/coagulation issues, there are probably lots of other options as well.

That's one of the nice things about the kickstart - you can adjust things as needed for your particular life situation without any major problems, unlike some 'programs' that require you eat exactly what is listed at the exact day and time pre-determined by someone else.

The timing of this Kickstart is perfect for me. I'm just starting to transition from an omni diet to a vegan diet so I'm very happy to have the support for the first 3 weeks.

Hi All:
I have two friends who are starting the kick-off with me on Monday. We're very excited. I've been reading Eat to Live and happened upon this site through Alicia Silverstone's site. Hoping to lose some weight and lower my blood sugar and really adopt a new lifestyle. Thanks for this great campaign and site!

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the vegan experience and am really looking forward to starting. I've never been one to each a lot of 'different' veggies - I've stuck mostly to the 'safe ones'.

I know I am addicted to sugar and carbs. The meat isn't going to be too much of a big deal.

I'm planning on trying some of the recipes, but I'm worried about what I will eat and will I get stuck in a rut and eat the same thing everyday because I'm not that adventurous.

Anyone else out there that has the same concerns? I'm looking forward to the support on the website and from everyone.

1 - make this your chance to be a little more adventurous. Promise yourself you'll try one "new" food/recipe for breakfast, one for lunch and one for dinner each week of the three weeks of the kickstart. That's not a lot - 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners that are new and then lots of familiar options (Like cereal).

2 - even if you simply find one breakfast, 2 or 3 lunches, and a few dinners and repeat them, that's fine - you do NOT have to have exactly what they say every day. For instance, I have pretty much either cold cereal with plant milk or oatmeal every morning for breakfast even though the kickstart menu plan has a whole lot of other options. The point of the kickstart is to introduce a WHOLE LOT of options, new foods, new recipes in order for you to find which things you enjoy. Hubby and I joke that we never thought we'd say things like "uh-oh we're out of hummus, need to make more" or "gee, this quinoa chickpea pilaf is awesome". Laughing This is an *opportunity* not a requirement. I've/we've done two kickstarts before this one so far and basically, we try new recipes that look interesting and incorporate them into our regular rotation - we have half a dozen soups now and we pick one per week, we ALWAYS make a pot of chili each week, we do something with quinoa at least once a week, something with lentils, something with rice, etc. The main thing is getting variety into the rotation - even if the rotation is routine, you're varying some things. We have also acquired over time a good shelf full of vegan cookbooks so we'll look and say "the kickstart menu has chickpea pilaf and greens for dinner tonight - how can we change that up this time?" and we'll look for recipes that include greens, chickpeas, etc but in a different arrangement (maybe a kale soup or a mashed chickpea and spinach 'shepherd's pie' or whatever).

What is also good is that if a recipe calls for bok choy, I can check the grocer store and see Hey, the kale is a dollar cheaper than bok choy this week, I'll get that instead. Or spinach, or chard, or whatever - knowing how to use all different types of greens (for instance) means we're not 'stuck' with something that is out of season, expensive, nasty looking.

Probably our favorite part of kickstart is the DIY meals where you apply what you've been learning and build your own meal based on the things you like - maybe you prefer yellow lentils to red or you like white beans instead of pintos, and the rainbow chard was on special at the market so you use that instead of kale and you've got some favorite spices and poof, you've invented your own new favorite thing! (and when you do, PLEASE, tell us about it!)

Hi! I'm pretty new to vegan eating, but have been wanting to try it for a while. I did one Kickstart last year, but it didn't "stick". I "flirt" with veganism, as Alicia Silverstone says, but have noticed that my IBS symptoms improve when I don't eat meat. I am allergic to milk, so have been dairy-free for years. And that is actually one of the things that attracts me to veganism - not having to fool with dairy substitutions in recipes. The health benefits, and hopefully weight loss benefits are appealing as well.

I'm so excited to get started with my very first Kickstart! I've "gone" vegan several times since I first read Dr. Barnard's book about the New Four Food Groups about 13 years ago, but I keep falling off the wagon, so to speak.

I know my biggest challenges are going to be
1)cooking for myself along with my omnivore hubby & kids
2)expense, and
3)doing without the convenience foods (let's face it, at the end of a busy day a pizza or some baked chicken nuggets are often "life-saver" foods)

But, our garden gets bigger each year and grains and legumes usually cost barely anything (shh! don't tell the retailers!), so I'm optimistic - especially now that I know there's a forum like this one for support!
Woo hoo! Very Happy

Hi! Glad to join this forum. I've been vegan for 8 years but most of those have been eating a lot of the processed junk stuff. Hopefully the kickstart will help to clean up my diet and kick my cola addiction.

Susan it sure would be nice to be able to print meals for one.

Is everyone familiar with the work of Dr. John McDougall? He is a friend of Dr. Barnard and recommends essentially the same plant-based diet. Something he has said made a big hit with me, not being an adventurous or skilled cook. He recommends people find a few meals they really like and repeat them as often as wanted through the week. That helps me enormously.
