Good news!
Posted Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 9:00 PM

I just caught the 5:30 news and it featured a story on vegan eating - using Guy Laraque (hockey star), Jessica Simpson, Mike Tyson and others who are now eating a vegan diet. It showed dismal pics of food animal conditions, talked about the environmental impact of eating meat and about the health benefits of eating a plant-based diet.

The down side? They interviewed a young dietician who claimed that removing meat can be detrimental to your health by causing incomplete proteins "if it isn't done right"! And sadly, the piece ended with her. Hopefully, her misguided info won't be all people will remember....

Where did this air? Maybe I'll write the station and offer some clarity!

Hi Susan -

It was shown on Global TV Vancouver (BC). Here's the link: http://www.globalnews.ca/health/index.html

(there is a panel of videos on the right hand side - this one is the one with the cornucopia of veggies showing. And there's a 30 second ad first)

I thought of writing in as well. Let us know if you get a response!

Yeah, it's not great that they didn't end with more clarification after the nutritionist person, even though she does have a point. Not being aware of things like B12 issues, making sure you get a variety of foods, etc. can indeed cause being vegan to be as unhealthy as anything else - after all, it's possible to be vegan and live on plain white pasta with sugar and salt packed commercial tomato sauce, white bread sandwiches with high fat fillings, etc. She (the nutritionist) had a point but they really should have (In the interests of proper reporting) included someone who could address those concerns "yes, those are valid concerns. Anyone changing to a vegan way of eating needs to pay attention to what and how they are eating. It's not simply continuing to eat spaghetti with high sodium sauce and high fat margarine and just leaving out the meatballs."

Although it was quieter, the hockey player ended with the best response which is EVERYBODY should think about what they are eating, not just vegetarian and vegans. It does bother me that red flags are constantly thrown up when the idea of cutting out meat and/or dairy is mentioned. I just look around at what's going on with a 66% overweight population, 33% obese, and think really? You are worried about the vegans and vegetarians?

LOL, and it seems it's always someone about 50 pounds over-weight that questions me about how I get my protein, calcium and, and, and. . . . . . . . .

Oh, the words that WANT to pop out of my mouth. I may just print your quote here on some cards and start passing it out!!

Wild 4 Stars,

I'll be perfectly honest with you. The ignorance is so thick here in England that you can phone a complete stranger at 3.00 in the morning and say: "I'm thinking of going vegan", and all they wanna know is where you're gonna get your calcium from.

They're not interested in who you are or how you got their number or why you're calling them at 3.00 in the morning.

It's a phenomenon. Try it.

Just remember that 3.00 am over here is about 8.00 pm your time.

Theodore

You're hilarious. The word "vegan" is from an Englishman: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Watson. So props from across the pond for that!

LOL guys.

Isn't this a surreal time though ?? Bill Clinton and Mike Tyson both vegan. Ellen too. But maybe Ellen isn't so surprising. It seems like most comedians are vegan or vegetarian. Ellen, Bill Maher, Kevin Nealon, Sarah Silverman, Duchovny. I recently heard of a comedian called Myq Kaplan too.

Is it true that Seinfeld is vegetarian ?? I saw something in one of his stand-up bits about milk being meant for baby cows not humans.

I'm sure I read that Shandling is vegetarian too.

Janet Jackson just recently mentioned on a television show that she is going "mostly" vegan. We'll see what that means...

Janet goes back and forth depending on her mood (and waistline, perhps?), but she's in a contract with a large furrier, BlackGlama, and is appearing in print advertisements wearing mink coats and other fur. Definitely NOT a vegan in that case, though she is currently eating a plant-based diet.
