Whole Grain Bread
Posted Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 10:37 AM

What's the best kind of whole grain bread to buy? I noticed that regular whole wheat breads are not as good for you as the manufacturer would have you think, so I need something that lives up to the health benefits it touts.

Thanks,

Read the ingredients. If there's anything there that you wouldn't put in your own homemade, skip it. If there's anything besides whole grain (like unbleached fortified wheat flour), then you might also consider skipping it. Some people prefer to get the sprouted grain breads. Be prepared for 'sticker shock' if you're used to buying generic white bread - a decent loaf (the kind that is basic, whole, real ingredients) can cost upwards of $3 per loaf (Depending on brand, store, and geographic location).

In addition to the above, I like to make sure each slice/serving has about 4 grams of fiber. That tells me it's pretty good, whole-grain bread!
