No-Salt Canned Beans
Posted Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 11:33 PM

I think it's perfectly logical that the no-salt canned beans are more expensive than the salty equivalent. It must take a lot of time and energy to extract the salt.

Silly me! I thought no salt meant they did not ADD any... but if that were true, why would it cost more?? Shocked

I guess because the staff would have to be trained not to add salt.

I can see where that level of retraining could get expensive. Seems like nothing is simple anymore. Ahhh the good ole days, if you didn't want salt in your beans, you didn't add any... wait... that is what I do! Must be I have the perfect simple life.

I usually buy organic so that's why they are higher.

Check the prices here compared to what you get at the grocery store.

I usually cook my own, but like to have some cans in the pantry for quick meals.

Sounds like you're living the dream, Oceandog.

In the event that I prepare my own beans, I find it hard enough remembering not to add sugar, nevermind not adding salt. I just can't concentrate on two things at once.

That's why I'm happy to pay extra for the varieties where the salt has already been not added.

I guess also, if they don't put the salt in the cans of beans, then they've gotta store it somewhere. Resulting in higher storage costs. Which they rightly pass on to the consumers who didn't buy the salt.

Have you ever thought of running for president of the US?

We could use your common sense.

Theodore, your logic is enlightening!

WildStars, Oceandog,

Thanks so much for your thoughts and KW's. It's so heartening to finally be taken seriously on this forum.

I'll definitely give it some thought. It's been too long since you guys had someone called Theodore running your country. Could be about time for another one.

Does that mean we can start calling you Teddy?

Oceandog,

To be honest, if you're gonna abreviate my name, my preference would be "Odore".

If you could be as good as the last Theodore you could get elected and re-elected almost as often as he did!!

I saw a bumper sticker the other day:

ELECTION 2012 ~
End of an error.

Oh, that's a good one.

I mean good from a technical point of view. I quite liked Obama. Has he been in 8 years already ?

NO! Only coming up on his 4th year. 2012 is election year. Right now nobody knows who the Republican candidate is likely to be.

So Odore, that sounds kind of like adore or is odor? tee hee At any rate, perhaps Theodore is best, it does really have a certain ring to it. I also have no doubt should you be a president here in the USA, you would be one of a kind, therefore, can't use Teddy, as it has been done.

I think it has to do with storage and spoilage actually - without salt, they could go bad faster, thus changing the supply/demand thingie.

Doing them from scratch is actually easier because there are FEWER things to do - no ingredients to add or subtract, just beans and water.

Oh, good points Deb. I suspect it's a mixture of all the above explanations.

I really can't say that I mind the salt that much. So I'm happy to go with the money on this one.
