Hair loss

I keep hearing that vegetarianism and veganism can cause hair loss or a lack of hair growth. Is this true? Can anyone help me to understand why or why not?

There is no evidence that this is true. However, not eating enough calories can lead to hair loss, regardless of the dietary choices.

not enough calories or poor nutrient balance (eating lots of processed 'vegetarian' foods instead of whole foods - white flour pasta with sugar-laden tomato sauce is technically vegan but not in the same class as whole grains and fresh tomatoes)
