OK, so the title of this thread SHOULD say "Heart Attack" but it won't let me edit it! Oh well, maybe it gets more attention that way! Laughing

Waving hello to Lani!

I watched it a couple of times too. What I really wanted to know is what is Sanjay eating? Laughing

I also had no idea Dr Agatston was that cutting edge with his research. I found that very interesting. Dr. Barnard's explanations as usual were very easy to understand.

Now I just need to get Forks over Knives which is in the Netflix queue. Available yesterday, I think.

Hey Dobby! We were just talking over on my PB Fitness Group about how we wish there was even MORE info on this video report by Gupta - it should have been a series!

I too wanted to know what Gupta's diet is like. AND the South Beach doc - where does his work with heart disease and the SB diet connect? Or are they unrelated? I also think it wold be fascinating and help for understanding of viewers to see more clear details about how plaque becomes calcification - where does the blood in the 'bad vial' become 'calcified', and how?

Dr. Barnard - I didn't see him in the film - ?

Glad to hear FOK is in the Netflix queue - we put it on months ago so hopefully won't have to wait too long!

Lani, I agree about more detail. I also wondered about the South Beach->heart disease connection. I always had the impression SB was high protein, lo carb, but I will admit that it is one diet that came out after I stopped dieting so have never tried. Anyway I found it odd that Dr. Agatston was the *go-to* guy when I was not sure what he advocated food-wise.

Uhhhh....I was watching lots of things the other afternoon, maybe that was a trailer for Forks over Knives? In thinking about it, I guess it was...since he was talking about diabetes!

My Mom has dementia but is still a voracious reader. She always refers to me as Dobby the House Elf from the Harry Potter series.

Oh, Harry Potter! I only read the first HP book and haven't seen the movies - maybe one? I know, sacrilege for a teacher! That's just the way it is.

SB I did read years ago and though not as tight on carbs as Atkins, still in the same realm. I wonder where we could get an answer to our question?

Hello Lani! Very Happy

Although pretty healthy and mostly eating an organic diet for the last few years, Forks over Knives was an eye opener for me... and my 'meat and potato,' 'eggs and bacon' husband. I've shared the film with as many friends and family that would agree to sit and watch it. It's very difficult to dispute the science that is presented in the film... very well done. I also bought the books associated with the film (Forks over Knives companion book, China Study, Engine 2, and Dr. Barnard's as well), most of which contain recipes. Although I ate 'meat' rarely, I've eliminated it (and chicken) from my diet along with dairy products. I am, however, still eating some fish (even though most have a face... and a mother!) I've always liked to cook and enjoy the taste of 'real' food, particularly fresh produce that can be easily prepared, and with a combination of seasonings, my meals are delicious! One other observation that I've made from the books is that our country's acceptance of BP of 120/80 is only a target... BP readings should and could be much lower if eating the right diet. The same for cholesterol levels... acceptable by standard medical care is the 200 range. My target now is 150!

Very Happy

Hi everyone and especially Lani,

Forks over knives hasnt come to Néw Zealand yet but I am buying the DVD from the web site - then I can share it with people. I havent seen it myself yet but from the reviews I know I will want to pass the message on.

As for Bill Clinton - thanks for the link. its great. I was living in Little Rock when he was govenor (before he became President obviously) and it only seems like yesterday. Where does time go? Ok - there is no real answer to that but I think we all get better with age the more we look after ourselves, eat real food, add some exercise and stick to being vegan.

Onward and upward to the kickstart. I am looking forward to it.

Hey Kiwi, great name - considering! How did you land in NZ from Arkansas?

I haven't seen FOK yet either - I hear it's finally up on NetFlix though so hopefully soon! Is there a Netflix or equivalent in NZ?

Hi again Lani,

To answer your question my parents are in NZ and I came here when my Dad becme unwell a few years ago. He has since passed away and I am still here. go figure

Shocked

As you are part of the McDougall "family" I want to let you know I am a hugh McDougall fan. I started my journey to improving my diet and trying to loose weight following Dr Furhman. While I have great respect for him it wasnt for me as I got tired of the salads and failed his 6-week challenge. I then found the kickstart and that helped me to change from vegetarian to vegan so I wll be forever greatful. However,a few too many transition foods and not enough low fat and the weight was going nowhere but my body. I read the McDougall plan and it has just clicked with me. All three ways of eating (Furhman, Barnard and McDougall) are similar with more in common than not. So I think its not the eaing plans as such but how we receive the message and what we do with it. I am now a proud McDougall low fat (no added fats) eater and have lost 11 lbs. The weight is coming off slowly but at least it is coming off and I feel better. Still love the kickstart for the motivation to remain vegan and I credit the kickstart with helping me to kick my cheese addiction.

Hey Kiwi,

So sorry to hear about your Dad, I lost mine about 3 years ago and my mother a year before that so I know what it's like to be part of that club. Sad

As for the rest, I totally get it about Eat for Life and for me, eating according to those guidelines (yes, I make myself a guinea pig so can report from experience!) and thought I credit Fuhrman for really helping me ramp up the veggie content, I was just too hungry. I know he might counter with the 'true hunger' argument but frankly I never got what he meant by that, did you?

So, the starch connection makes it all work for satiety. You still need mountains of veggies for nutrition and to optimize weight loss - the 50-50 or 1/3 - 2/3 plan works well for that. And the oils. Always, the oils. Makes an amazing difference for many of us.

And yes, these guys are all on the same page at 99% in agreement and the 1% doesn't matter. Though naysayers may like to point out the differences, they are also the ones who aren't even doing the 99%! We all like to be told our bad habits are good for us, right?

Things must be great in NZ if you've stayed on!

Lani, Susan, or anyone who knows,
I hear that the chance of an MI is greater in persons with an increased small ldl level. I'm confused about the different in how large and small ldl particles are formed and how the small ldl can be decreased. Does exercise and a no added fat vegan diet lower the small ldl or just the large ldl or both?

Kandoo, you are not alone in this question! I'm going to be at the McDougall Advanced Study Weekend next weekend and am on assignment to ask this question from people on my T.Colin Campbell PB group, via all kinds of emails, and...well, as I said, you are not alone!

In the meantime, I posted some post-production comments from Dr. Gupta. It doesn't address your question, but is more nonetheless:
