Farmer's Marker tomorrow-shopping list!
Posted Friday, September 2, 2011 at 11:50 AM

We have a wonderful farmers market on Saturday mornings. The harvest in this area is about 2-3 weeks behind because of the chilly June we had so we've still got some fruit and berries available..or at least we did last week! I am making my shopping list based on what was there last week but will of course have to be flexible!

-Cherry tomatoes (found a great recipe for lightly cooked pasta sauce in the paper last week)

-Heirloom tomatoes

-kale

-beets with greens

-cauliflower...last week the only one left was $10!! I said *no thanks*!! Will get there earlier tomorrow to get a better pick

-big bag of salad greens

-summer squash

-peaches...may still be there. Last week was the last week for apricots, but they thought peaches would still be in

-blueberries

-blackberries

-melons

-lentils (These are locally grown, not *organic* as that is hard to do for legumes or wheat)

-wheatberries (Just tried these this summer and really like salads with them. Now to find some *wintery* or *autumn-y* lol recipes!)

I wound up spending about $40 last week. Well worth it for local produce. I did get so much a couple of weeks ago I couldnt carry it all! They have little red wagons you can use to transport your goods!

Anyone else going to a farmers market for your kickstart food? What's your shopping list? What are you hoping for soon? We'll have apples coming in Sept as well as winter squash.

Watermelons!!
One of my favorite salads this time of year is a simple corn & tomato.. with green onions & lime juice. Yum.

Yes...and it should be Farmer's MARKET!! Danged fingers!

The watermelons looked good last week but I was out of hands. I need to get there early tomorrow so I can park close and make a couple of trips back to the car...with the little red wagon! Yes I do need the exercise but I dont think I can carry a watermelon 4 blocks which is were I had to park last week!

That corn/tomato/onion salad sounds great. Maybe I will pick up some limes at the grocery today in anticipation of tomorrow. Do you chunk up the tomatoes? Maybe I can convince someone (brother) to grill the corn...

Thanks so much for the tomato corn salad recipe! I picked up limes yesterday at the grocery store and was hoping there would be some corn at the market and there was! It was kind of an odd collection of stuff...lots of summer stuff still producing as well as some things that are edging into fall!

I wound up with:

Corn

Tomatoes (slicing and cherry)

Peaches

Blackberries

Strawberries

Blueberries

Rhubarb

Green Onions

Cantalope

Watermelon

Kale

Salad greens

Apples

Pears (pretty hard yet so in to a paper bag to ripen)

I had to make 2 trips to the car to drop things off. I had been running late so did not eat breakfast, but was able to have a vegan chocolate coconut ice cream cone from a local vendor. They also make an awesome chocolate lavendar ice cream (non-vegan!).

So far I've got the kale steamed, rhubarb chopped and ready for a strawberry-rhubarb crumble and cherry tomatoes ready for a lightly cooked pasta sauce.

I'm ready for the week!

Pam
