I want to officially welcome all the newcomers to the September 2011 Kickstart and welcome back the alums. I think you will find this forum to be one of the most informative aspects of the Kickstart. You won't believe the knowledge that gets exchanged right here everyday! We are all here to help each other with anything and everything. So here we go...

Woo Hoo! Ready for another one. I've been mostly vegan since the Sept 2009 Kickstart, 100% vegan since January 2010.

I always learn so much from these forums!

Good Morning from South Dakota. I got a quick question. I'm going to be travelling out of town on business from September 15-September 18, and will be staying at a hotel and working in a fairly small community with little-to-no chance of finding the proper foods I need for those days. Should I start my 21-days after I return, or just do what I can do while travelling? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Bruiser.

Find the nearest grocery store, salad bar, etc and make your meals from there. Restaurants are more flexible than you think. Ask questions, explain how you want things prepared, order without the cheese, etc. I see no reason to wait.

Hi there!!

I'm from Vancouver, BC. I have cut out land dwelling animals and dairy from my diet, I still eat eggs and sea dwellers. I have been working towards eliminating those from my diet as well though. I hope that this kickstart will help me towards that.

I have one concern about this kickstart...what about the salt intake? There are some packaged and canned foods on this plan...what is their salt content?

Other than that I think it is great! Smile

Hi Nym,
I was also concerned with that. What i do is use dried beans. Have you ever used them? They are super easy but require more time.
Basically I have both canned and dried on hand. When i can,which is most of the time, I use dried.

When I make beans I will make one whole bag of beans and then put what I don't use in the freezer. Also since they do take a little time, sometimes i will make 2 types of beans at the same time in different pots. We use a lot of black beans and garbanzo beans. Honey loves hummus We both love black bean burgers and not-tuna salad.

Hey Nym,

You can easily adjust sodium by steering clear of packaged products (I know you know that) and monitoring anything you add to your plate.

77% of the sodium in the typical American diet comes from restaurant and processed foods. Even wonder why your weight is up a couple of pounds the morning after a restaurant meal? It's the sodium!

5% is added during cooking , and another 6% while eating. We already get 12% naturally occurring in foods without added sodium.

Dr. Barnard suggests no more than 2000 mgs of sodium a day, which is about that which you would find in a teaspoon of salt. But keep in mind that includes that naturally occurring in foods. And sodium content is listed on food packages and labels to assist.

Hey Bruiser, I'm with wildstar on this one - you can make this work anywhere - I travel a lot to all kinds of hidden corners of the planet and have made it work - you just have to get creative and prioritize. Search the web for any outlets for produce or dried foods you can get on site, and pack some things to take along. You can usually get a fridge and micro in your room, check on that.

Pack some dried McDougall soups, some rolled oats (you can soak them overnight and eat without cooking) or meusli. Fruit should be easy to pick up, along with carrots (take a peeler if you need) and bags of greens.

Don't wait! Seize the day! After all, you have all of us as resource and to cheer you along!

My husband and I are joining this vegan kickstart, it is our first time and we are very excited about it. I am 57 yrs old and 65 pounds overweight and excercise...remind me again what that is? lol Really, I have back problems and am limited in what I can do and still avoid surgery, but that is improving. My husband is 72 and needs to lose 50 pounds. We know and love vegan food, but eat too much too seldom. Very excited and encouraged about this plan and hope to gain better health, more energy and grow old with less complaints Very Happy Any thoughts to help us along the way will be appreciated - hope to jump on here each evening after work!

Hi Bruiser,

I agree with the other 2 responses. Go ahead and start the kickstart now. You may surprise yourself at how well it goes or you may be closer to my expereince. I wish I could say I was one of those who followed the diet perfectly from day one but that wasnt me. I was great at home but eating out and traveling were the 2 things that I found/find the hardest. I am only getting it right now - after 2 kickstarts (9 months). It was the hidden indregients that would catch me out if I didnt read labels carefully enough (particularly diary products in various forms) or not having the courage to ask the right questions in the restaurant as I didnt want to 'stand out'. It just took me time and practice. So give it a go. If you fall of the wagon for a meal for whatever reason during your travel on the kickstart dont beat yourself up and dont give up. Just get back on for the next meal.

Hi there!

I recieved this email about the 21 day kickstart at the perfect time! I had planned on starting a vegan cleanse on Sept.5 which coincides with my return from vacation. The foods are very similar to the kickstart. I would love to join the challenge! Does one have to stick strictly to the menu or can I create my own foods? The foods look great on the plan but I want to incorporate some juices in as well. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Lori,

You can use the menu or create your own foods. I do a mix of both depending on whats in the house and what I feel like eating that day. The important thing is sticking to the principles of healthy vegan eating (not stocking up on those lovely vegan chocolate chip cookies I found during my first kickstart and wondering why I didnt loose weight!)

The menu is to get people started who may not know how to cook delicious vegan meals. The following is copy/pasted from the week one menu page in case you missed it.


Kickstart DIY: DIY is short for a do-it-yourself recipe. We want you to get into the habit of going out on your own and making meals without a recipe. If you are not feeling ready for a DIY meal, stick to a recipe. But if you are, grab that can of beans, cook up some brown rice, and top with cooked greens or some frozen mixed vegetables. Or mix your favorite fruits together and toss with soy yogurt. Let your imagination run wild with Kickstart DIY meals.

Hi, everyone, I'm not a newcomer, this is my 3rd kickstart, but I've yet to stick to one 100%. Not because of the food ( I adore beans, veggies, salads, and fruit), but because of rationalizing that because I eat healthy most of the time, a little egg, or fish, or frozen yogurt every now-and-then won't hurt.(The old "well, they're healthy on other diets!"). But I've decided I need to do this, for health reasons, and I would like to lose a few pounds. BTW, its nice to recognize names from the "past". Good luck to all of you!

Hi, all!

My boyfriend & are were fortunate to see Dr. Neal Barnard speak at Whole Foods in Santa Fe, NM last month. I was certain my confirmed carnivore BF would scoff at the "ridiculous" idea of going vegan, but something struck a chord! A miracle has happened! He is not only just willing to try it, he is more into the idea than I am! We actually started on the 1st because his b-day is on the 22nd & he wanted to commit to at least the 21 days, then if he wanted to eat meat on his birthday, he wouldn't be "cheating" on the kickstart. He even made up a chart for himself to track his weight, stress and energy levels. I think he should track his hunger as well, as that is his downfall. He already has high blood pressure, diabetes, and is in pain all the time.

I have a 16 year old son living at home, but I am not forcing him to eat vegan. I will cook vegan & it is what will be put on the table, but if he wants to go out somewhere & eat meat he will be able to. There's enough trouble raising a teen than to impose even more harsh restrictions. Perhaps if he sees concrete results with us it will bring him around.

I saw there is a weight tracking thread and I will join that. My BF is currently 43, 6'1" & weighs 308. I am 49, 5'4 1/2" & weigh 215. 2 years ago I weighed 160 and was a size 8. I had to leave my great job and move to another state with no friends or family and no work... everything went downhill from there. Now I live in yet another state & got a job after struggling to get one. This economy & recession had hit home. I work at Whole Foods as a cashier now, which is a great environment to be on a vegan diet in... the 20% discount doesn't hurt either! Wink My weight makes it very difficult & painful to work standing all day, tho. I get up from the couch like an 80 year old woman & hobble around, when just a year ago I was hiking for 6 to 12 miles in a day, or walking the treadmill for over an hour. I can't shake the feeling that something's terribly wrong with me... I feel like I'm dying. I do have high blood pressure & I'm always in pain. Hopefully I will see, and feel, some dramatic improvement in my health & energy by going vegan.

We are terribly concerned over the cost of our food. We are very tightly budgeted. I will be making DIY meals for the most part. I ordered a book titled "Eat Vegan on $4 a Day". I think most of the cost cutting comes from making "from scratch" meals. I did eat vegetarian almost 18 years ago for just over a year, so foods like tofu, home-made hummus, and brown rice are no stranger to me. The challenge is making things to satisfy the BF's enormous hunger and meat-loving cravings. Luckily, I joined a community garden and have veggies growing in 2 plots. I have plenty of yellow squash,zucchini, eggplant, poblano and jalapeno peppers. Sometimes have tomatoes. I'm getting tired of an overflow of the same veggies, tho'. Think I'll cut them up and freeze them...

I liked seeing the recipe plans for week one & look forward to more recipes and ideas. I remember being on a more conventional diet a few years ago (I lost 60 pounds) and one thing that I did differently than a fellow co-worker following, and failing, on the same diet was this: I focused on the things I COULD have rather than the things I COULDN'T. Exactly the opposite of what my friend was doing. I just seem to have a much harder time being motivated.

I would like to incorporate exercise, but I feel exhausted all the time. I also got bone spurs in my heels and tendonitis from them, so walking now hurts. Walking was my go-to exercise in the past. It was how I lost so much weight, and, it's FREE! It is terribly defeating to not be able to exercise because it hurts too much. I am counting on losing weight with this Kick-Start so that I will hurt less and be able to walk more.

In the meantime I have boxes full of size 8 clothes yearning to be free! I'm tired of shopping at Goodwill for size 18/20!
