Chop Sticks Over Knives
Posted Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 3:27 PM

I’ve just been re-reading Dr Barnard’s book Power Foods For The Brain. It really is a scintillating read. Well of course it is, I helped him write most of it. The only reason I’m not mentioned in the book is because my girlfriend at the time got very jealous whenever I hung out with Dr Barnard. That was part of the reason we broke up actually.

Anyway, I was specifically going over the stuff about iron cookware leaching iron into the food. And then the thought struck me: what about metal cutlery ? I was actually in the middle of eating a mouthful of soup at the time, and when I pulled the spoon out of my mouth, I noticed a rainbow type pattern on the back of the spoon. I don’t know if it was the heat of the soup, or the acids in my mouth, or just the way the disco lighting in my bedroom was reflecting on the metal, but something was causing this rainbow-like vision on the back of the spoon, and I had an uneasy feeling about it.

So ever since that day, I’ve been using chop sticks. Not for soup obviously, but for everything else. With soup I’ve started just licking it up directly from the bowl. Like a cat. A vegan cat, dare I say it.

Do you think I’m being over cautious ?

Theodore, why on earth are you eating soup in your bedroom? (Not wishing to make any jokes about "is that the only hot and steamy thing going on there, of course).

Also, vegan cat? Let's not go there....ok?

Are your chop sticks wooden or other material? I just had some Chinese food for dinner, but used a fork. Didn't notice a rainbow on mine, but I ate in the kitchen. Wink

P.S. I can pick out your posts without even looking at the author now.

I was in piano mode when I read this, having just finished practice. so I thought you were talking about the piano song, then I realized 'oh he means the kind you eat'

I like spoons for stirring (vegan) coffee creamer into my coffee and enjoying the lovely layers / colours swirl about... not as multi-hued as your rainbows! indeed purple and blue colours in coffee would be strange.

Marionberry, I think maybe he is eating soup in the room because his girl-friend might try to sneak some non-vegan things in the bowl! or maybe his kitchen's too cold.

Just make sure your chopsticks are made from organically grown, sustainably harvested, fair trade bamboo. And you forgot to mention what the bowl is made of?

Mari, I hesitate to tell you why I was eating dinner in my bedroom, because I know you'll misinterpret it. For sure, there was a daddy long legs in the dining room. But it's not about me being scared. He just had that look in his eye, like he wanted to be alone for a while. And I'm a considerate kind of guy, as you well know.

Anyway, thanks for your feedback. And Kittens and Vicki too.

Vicki you know me too well. Organic and sustainably harvested all the way. The bowl was a refurbished coconut shell which floated all the way to these shores of its own accord. But I think deep down you already knew that.

Theodore, I believe the rainbow effect is similar to bubbles - caused by a layer about the same thickness as the wavelength of light. Its called interference and I think its just light reflecting through layers, that's all.

this is the best community ever! thank you all for making me honestly laugh buckets-full and inspire me to hold onto vegan living.

ok theo, what does buffus mean? no, really, i WAS in piano mode! i mean when i first read ths. and, i meant, eat *with* chopsticks, not eat the chopsticks themselves...unless they WERE edible, like made out of tofu or something!

aw, poor daddy-long-legs. i feel sorry for bugs/insects. people don't realize THEY are more scared of us than we are scared of them!

Thanks for your thoughts, Veganer. When you put it like that it doesn't sound so bad. I just hope you're right.

It just means "sweet". I totally believe you about the piano practice.

But see Kittens, this is exactly what I was worried about. People misinterpreting my actions. I thought I made it quite clear why I decided to have dinner in my bedroom. Nothing to do with fear. And I don't think he was scared of me either. If he was so scared, why did he keep flying at my face every 10 seconds ?

I guess it depends how you define "maybe".

I thought you said he wanted to be alone. If he was flying at your face every 10 seconds that doesn't sound like he wanted to be alone.

Listen people, this thread's gotten way off track here. It's supposed to be about Dr Barnard's book and metal cutlery. Can we please stick to the issues.

Somehow I missed this entirely. Sheesh.

BFFs with Dr. Barnard, jealous girlfriend, metal poisoning, rainbows, chopsticks, spiders, secret slurping in the bedroom! WOW

So, say howdy to Dr. B.
Good riddance to the GF.
Some people are low on iron!
Rainbows are lovely and speak of promises.
Chopsticks make great hair ornaments for those of us that are challenged to eat with them.
Spiders get escorted outside almost immediately upon discovery.
I LOVE soup and don't really care where I consume it.

Did I miss anything??

Well it's about bloody time you weighed in on this, Ms Dog.

For a while there I thought I was gonna have to send out another search party for you.

Well you know how it can be out here in the "Wild West".

I am glad though that I didn't miss this. I do enjoy our chats! Smile
