Vitamin D
Posted Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11:36 AM

I was diagnosed with low vitamin D so I am on a supplement designed to get me back to normal. My doctor said that after I finish the prescription I should take a normal vitamin D supplement every day. My trouble is that the vitamins I have looked at are made from animal products, either fish oil or WOOL! Do you know of any vegan vitamin D sources?

Look for Vitamin D2, or a D that says "as ergocalciferol." D3 is the animal-derived form, usually from sheep's wool, and that may say "as cholecalciferol." The labels don't always use the numbers.

There are lots of vegan multivitamins that contain D2, and you can also get it separately. Deva and Country Life are two popular vegan supplement brands. I have seen them at Whole Foods, health food stores, etc.

D2 is also the form in soymilks, other plant milks, and other fortified foods like cereals.

A good place to research options is via one of the vegan online stores, where they have done the research for you (as far as the veganness of the products), even if you then buy the product somewhere else. Try veganessentials.com or veganstore.com.

Good luck. I know a lot of people who have seen great improvement after addressing a low-D status. Don't forget to get your sunshine! That's the easiest/best/least expensive way. Smile

Thank you so much for the info, it makes a lot of sense, I will look for vegan vitamins once I get off this high dose stuff. Best Smile
