Is it September yet?

I can't wait for the next Kickstart! The last one turned me Vegan, and I've kept it up since. I love it, and my body, my health, my ethics and my morals love it. But the Kickstart does so much for my sense of community and feeling of belonging. Getting really excited for September! How about all of you?

I'm wondering why they have waited so long in between. I guess you can only have so many "kick starts." I've already done 3!! But yes, the interaction and community is nice.

Hi all - hope you're enjoying your summer! I was just thinking about this forum last night and voila - a post appeared today. Love the synchronicity! Yes, I, too, need another kick to get me started! I have fallen off the wagon with my diabetic diet (not so much non-vegan, but too much fat and sugar and white carbs - i.e. for dinner last night I had mashed potatoes and licorice. That's what happens when you live alone and don't make the effort!) I watched my taped episode of Oprah featuring Dr. Oz, Bob Greene and Dr. Ian Hunter who spoke about diabetes so that gave me a wake-up call for sure (I have been an absolute food angel today ). But as mentioned, the sense of support and community here is what I'm missing. Hate to wish away my summer, but I'm looking forward to September for the next Kickstart. Great hearing from you Molly and Wild4Starts!

Hi All: I, too, can't wait for the September Kick Start to commence. It does seem like there should be some sort of "On going" program and then "Specialty" ones added. I miss hearing what all of you have to say and your great tips and advice. I have been doing fairly well. I must admit there have been a few times when I have been vegetarian and not vegan (couln't resist cake for my birthday)but for the most part I am staying vegan. I have definately not had any meat. I realixe that the vegan part is challenging especially on vacation, holidays, etc. but the meat is where I draw the line. I will have a plain bowl of rice at sushi restaurant or hash browns and tomoatoes at an omelette joint before I break that vow. Good for all of you for staying in the groove!

Hey Guys, Love that a few of us are still on board. I'm looking forward to the next kickstart too. Like you say, it's the feeling of community that we find here. Till September! Linda

Hey Bluesgyrl, Do you know there are tons of vegan substitutions for your favorite animal dishes? For example, sushi restaurants will make vegan rolls using asparagus, avocado, carrot, and other veggies – and they're delicious! Just ask your server for the vegetable roll options. At a breakfast restaurant, you could ask them to take the vegetables that they'd normally put in the omelette, and mix them in with your hashbrowns, or just serve them on the side. Healthy and delicious! As for cake and other holiday desserts, there are literally dozens of cookbooks that offer vegan versions of these classics, and they are often MORE delicious than the original! Isa Chandra Moskowitz's books are very highly regarded and really well-liked by most everyone – even carnists. http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_i_0?rh=k%3Avegan+desserts%2Ci%3Astripbooks&keywords=vegan+desserts&ie=UTF8&qid=1280080339 If you don't like to cook, you can even buy premade desserts. Just search around your city for a vegan restaurant, or even a bakery that might offer custom cakes. If that's not an option, there's always shopping online. Many companies will ship frozen cakes to you, or there's always Amazon! http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_i_1?rh=k%3Avegan+desserts%2Ci%3Agrocery&keywords=vegan+desserts&ie=UTF8&qid=1280080339 It sounds like you're doing awesome and trying really hard to stay vegan – that's great! I know how hard it can be, especially when dining out. There are so many restaurants that don't offer anything! We just have to get creative and be willing to ask for what we need from the server.

Hi Mariberry! I know what you mean – I live alone, too, and sometimes I walk into the kitchen and feel exhausted just looking at it! I think the most important thing that has helped me is to not bring those bad foods into the house in the first place. If I don't purchase potatoes, licorice, white flour, sugar, etc., then they can't find their way into my body. My pantry and refrigerator look like a health food store, I guess – but shouldn't they?! After all, we're trying to save our own lives here! I think we'll ALL find new hope and help in September – and lucky us to have it!

I have to admit I have completely fallen off the wagon (mostly dairy-wise) and am in bad need of a Kickstart!!! javascript:addSmiley(' '); My digestion is all tore up...I don't know what's wrong with me! Why do I keep eating things that I know are probably going to make me feel bad at some point in the next 24 hours? Do they have a twelve step program for people like me? I don't even really enjoy cheese that much anymore, but I see it or think about it and I want it. The Kickstart and the posts on the forum helped me feel accountable. I know I wasn't the most active poster, but I miss you guys.javascript:addSmiley(' ');

TXGIRL; I encourage you to read the book "The China Study." Cheese is addictive. If you could just cut dairy out totally you will be so much healthier AND you would quit craving it. It's a very good book. I know MANY vegetarians that went cold turkey vegan after reading it. Me included.

There are also two great videos by Dr. McDougall and PCRM's own Dr. Barnard: http://www.vegsource.com/news/2009/12/the-perils-of-dairy-video.html http://www.vegsource.com/news/2010/01/chocolate-cheese-meat-sugar-physically-addictive-foods.html I agree with Wild4Stars – the China Study is an amazing book. I read it cover to cover, and then found myself immediately wanting to read it again.

Thanks Mollyhorn for your support and suggestions. Although I am well versed at the suchi restaurant ordering vege rolls, I hadn't thought about the veges mixed in with the hash browns! Great suggestion. As far as the baked goods go...........Kickstart really inspired me and I have attempted successfully to bake many vegan delights. What can I say, sometimes I just get lazy. Presently, I am fighting the urge to make some banana muffins the non-vegan way because I have tried two different vegan banana muffin vegan receipes and have not liked them. Any suggestions anyone? I will say fortunately I have not crossed the cheese barrier. I read the China Study recently and it scared me straight.......well almost. I live in a City very condusive to Vegans so I will take your suggestion and find out where some of these Vegan restaurants are getting their baked goods. Thanks again.............this is why Kickstart is so important.

Thanks for the suggestion Wild4Stars & Mollyhorn! People keep mentioning that book so I guess I'll have to cave in and check my local library. Some one in my town has not been returning the vegan cookbooks they check out, but hopefully I'll be able to find the China Study. Otherwise, I'll look for it at Half Price Books. I did check out a veggie gal DVD and a couple of vegetarian (mostly vegan) cookbooks last week to get me back into things.

Hello All! We all should pat ourselves on the back for posting here! We are trying to stay in touch. And, Wild Stars, thanks for the tip to read The China Study. I just downloaded a sample to my Kindle. Many moons ago, I had the opportunity to travel to China as a student, and loved it. If you ever get a chance to go there, take it! On the book I have not yet read it, but it sounds good. I am not on any dairy and I feel better. I have been buying some of McDougall's DVD series, listed on his website, and I am enjoying them. I pick up tips from his wife, Mary, when she demonstrates her cooking techniques. Otherwise, I am still on the wagon and I have added a little fish to my diet, about twice a week. I grew up thinking fish was brain food, so I realize it has fat, but that's about the only fat I get. See you guys in September! Please keep in touch. I miss these boards! Cheers, EJ

Glad to see someone posting here. Love the summer and all the fresh veggies. I've been reading McDougal and SparkPeople postings. They've been helping, but I cann't wait for the kickstart in September. Eating vegan has become easier, but have caved in and got McDonalds ice cream cones on those hot summer days. Sometimes I've resisted them and went home and eat my Soy ice cream. I'll keep trying, I know it bad for me. One more month to go before the kickstart. Hey!

Good news for me this time. I can proudly say, that after one year of this program, my A 1 C is now 4.9! I wanted to share my new victory with you all! The Nurse who gave me the results was glowing with pride. EJ

Thanks Molly. I guess you are right, I am living proof to the power of the program and that it does work. It is such a good feeling to be out of the worried category. I talk about Vegan diets daily.
