Vegan Cookbooks You Enjoy
Posted Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 1:40 PM
I made my hubby a soup from "Vegan on the Cheap" last night - it was a southwestern-flavored soup with chickpeas and tomatoes. He pronounced it "delicious!" Recently, I bought Isa Chandra Moskowitz's new book, "Appetite for Reduction." Anyone made anything from that book yet?

My fave new vegan cookbook is Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's Color Me Vegan. You can see my video and sneak peek review of the cookbook AND download the audio of the Teleclass I did with Colleen early December here: Color Me Vegan She has these wraps with cashew cream....don't get me started!

I bought Appetite for Reduction & the recipes look delicious and seem like they will be easier than the ones in the Veganomicon, but I haven't made anything yet! I do love Veganomicon, but I'm not so practiced in the domestic arts and it takes me forever to make a meal from that book! I plan to get a lot better about all that happy homemaker stuff in 2011. I also love Vegan on the Cheap! It has the best mac&cheeze recipe I've tried so far. Another one that I have but haven't cooked from yet is Robin Robertson's Quick Fix Vegetarian. There's a new low-fat vegan cookbook coming out next month called The Happy Herbivore. Amazon already has it up with their nifty "click to view" option. It let me see a surprising number of pages and definitely looked worth pre-ordering.

Tinabean, I will look for that book! I have such a collection of cookbooks ... and my vegan ones are starting to outnumber the others, which is a very good thing!

These are the ones I use most often: Veganomicon Vegan on the Cheap The Supermarket Vegan The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen I love all of these but I think Veganomicon and The Supermarket Vegan are probably my favorites. But, whenever I'm looking for something new to eat/cook, I always pull out these four first.

I have only a couple vegan cookbooks: 2 McDougalls, and Skinny Bitch in the Kitch. I always go to McD's books, however I was just glancing through Skinny B and saw some absolutely fabulous recipes that appeal to me. Things like Pad Thai, Eggplant parm, lentil salad, falafel, etc. Usually I just go on the internet for my recipes nowadays, or check out magazines-hardly ever look @ my cookbooks anymore, and I have alot of them. Anyone identify with that?

Lani, I was on your teleconference re: The Color me Vegan book with Patricia. Was very encouraging & will be my next cookbook. She also has some other exciting books coming out this year that I will be waiting for too. I would like to purchase Skinny Bitch everyday cookbook... Has anyone checked that one out yet?? [quote] In answer to the above. My son & granddaughter got me the Skinny Bitch everyday cookbook for Christmas. Haven't made anything from it yet, but there are several really great sounding recipes. I've just been reading it as she has lots of good information in it as well. They also gave me a bookstore gift card with the cookbook so I can go get more soon.

thanks for the reply crafty! btw i also have checked out and enjoy the website fatfreevegan .. it's a good one.. we are still experimenting w/vegan food.. honey likes to throw thing together... last night he made black bean burgers.. he even soaked & cooked the beans (its a first) he threw in every veggie around... and some applesauce.. (why i don't know..i just eat it and say yumm and thank you) the "trouble" we are having with bean patties is that they don't hold together... last night we even threw in barley (frozen) that i had extra from cooking the refrigerator soup. Barley doesn't bind.. but it does make the patty a complete meal all on it's own. So are the suggestions to put in flour?? or brown rice??? will brown rice hold better than barley?? thanks for the help..

So glad you were on my call with Colleen (you called her Patricia here, but I get it as her last name is Patrick-Goudreau!). We're going to do more together in the new year, so stay tuned! By the way, were you on the webcast or the phone? I'm curious to hear how your webcast experience was if indeed you used that connection, as it is a new service that is working out really well for me BUT it's the listener that counts! Let me know. Here's another cookbook title that's a great standard Vegan Planet. However, my favorite cookbooks have pictures. LOTS of em. Vegan Planet doesn't have 'em, even though there are lots of great recipes. FYI, I'm putting together a short ecookbook that I'm finishing up with pics from my kitchen of easy recipes and dinner plates that I utilize a lot. I also like recipes that have only 5 ingredients - or less! Give or take. I'll have to put up a sample recipefrom my Fit Quickies Cookbook for my fine Kickstart friends. Has anyone put Engine 2 on the list? If so, I missed it. VERY cool book with some great recipes. Here's more info: Engine 2 Diet Some simple eats ideas and also a great progression for those making dietary change which I incorporate as part of my Booty Camps. Enjoy what you eat! Lani

Veganomicon has a great black bean patty recipe that holds together about like ground beef patties and you can cook it a little crispy on the outside too. Key thing for black bean patties is to serve them on something sturdy like whole grain bagels, rye or pumpernickle bread, etc. Even whole wheat burger buns are too soft. Hubby makes bagels fresh (we grind the whole wheat ourselves, fresh ground has a slightly different composition/texture/profile than storebought) and we use those as the platform for bean patties - and top with some organic ketchup (I found some that uses agave instead of sugar - no questions on how the sugar was processed that way) and some homemade pickles! We're loving the Veganomicon - of all the print cookbooks, it's our favorite. We also still use recipes from the September kickstart. We also check out Vegetarian Times website (and we have a subscription as well) for ideas. I particularly like their focus articles where they pick a veggie and do several things with it. --Deb R

I listened to the conference by phone and it was a great connection. I could hear everything fine. Lani, sorry I called Colleen, Patricia. Guess I was a little close LOL I remembered being too tired to go back to get the name right....I've been very ill with the worst flu/cold I've had in years. Pretty much been in bed or a chair for the past 5 days. Haven't been on my computer much & only for a short time. Got an injection from the doctor & some strong antibiotics & cough syrup. I let myself get too run down the week or so before Christmas. I have Lupus & was worried that I might get an attack or relapse, so made the right move and got in quickly to see my doctor. My Rheumatologist was just having me taper off the Lupus medication, due to an elevated liver enzyme test. All the more reason I need to get myself strictly back on the vegan diet and get some exercise going on! I don't know how many signs I need before I get the message that "taking care of myself" is a "priority"!!! Good timing for me to get back on board with the Kickstart

Here are the ones I've been using the most: Veganomicon - the first one I pull out when I'm trying to decide what to cook. I have the same emotional bond with this book as my grandmother did with Joy of Cooking
Viva Vegan by Terry Hope Romero This is a great Latin cookbook with recipes from Brazil, Spain, Cuba, Columbia and Mexico! There's a soup in there with lima beans and fresh corn that is hands-down the best soup I've ever eaten in my whole life. Just got Vegan Soul Kitchen for a Christmas present and I've made a few recipes from it already. I'm looking forward to summer - it has some great recipes using fresh summer veggies. I'm already planning my garden around this cookbook. Conscious Chef We just had the Quinoa Sweet Potato Timbales last night (for the second time in 2 weeks) and they were delicious. The recipes may seem a bit daunting at first, but they're really easy to prepare once you dive in. I was never a big cook before becoming vegan. I wanted to entice my SO into trying some of the new food I was eating, so I really made an effort to try new things and expand my culinary skills. It has made such a difference in our lives - we eat better than ever before and our friends are completely amazed when we make dinner. I'm so excited that someone mentioned the Slow Cooker cookbook - I'm off to Amazon.com right now!
