Vitamin B-12 & others

Is it suggested to take a b complex vitamin supplement when eating vegan? On that one i would rather be safe than sorry.
What about any other supplements?

Hi cch22,

B12 a good idea certainly!

As for lots of supplements, here is an article put together not long ago by Dr. McDougall that you might enjoy. You know you can count on him to give you some great food for thought!

Should we be taking fewer supplements?

FYI!

thank you Lani. I am not sure i agree totally with everything stated. In fact i know i don't.

I do in fact know more than one person who had troubles due to vitamin deficiancies.. One was a mom who did not take vitamins while pregnant.. her child had some serious problems.. another was an elderly person who didn't move much.. I also see people who just don't have the energy i do...

I do agree, vitamins should not be looked at to solve disease.. I do agree that people should not take the high dose vitamins... and they are not a replacement for food..

so i take a simple cheap multi, b complex, c when feeling sick, and sometimes the fish oil w/no mercury. no high doses of anything.

fish oil seems to still be up for debate.

I'm in agreement with Cynthia on this one, though I don't take fish oil due to cruelty concerns. (I take vegan DHA instead.)

Vitamins are insurance against illness, just like keeping up maintenance on your car. It's better to get those nutrients from our diet, of course, but in the event that I don't, I want to make sure that I'm getting them from somewhere.

B-12 is critical, as is Vitamin D. In my opinion, both should be considered a daily requirement, without question. Other things – up to the individual.

Molly, do you mind sharing what VitD you use, and how much you suggest?

Thanks all for the great conversation!

Oh, no problem!

Currently, I'm taking Central Market brand, 5000 iu, but this is a store brand, not available outside of Texas. I take such a high dose because my D level was dangerously low and my doctor wanted me on extra supplementation.

The DHA I take is Deva brand:

Hi, Lani!

Just read your Q to Mollyhorn and I'll put in my 2 cents. I do not take any multivitamin, never have. I use nutritional yeast as my B12 source, sometimes on foods and sometimes just pop a spoonful or two in my mouth 'cuz I like it! Probably 1-2Tbs every few days or so. My Dr. suggests his older patients (I'm fifty-eight) take D3, 1000 IU daily, especially in winter here (WA), but I haven't taken the time to go to the supplement store to find a vegan source. Gotten this far in life without it, and been vegan since 8-15-09, so...

I take a sublingual B-12 spray from Pangea (great online vegan store) and D2 (only D2 is vegan)

B12- http://veganstore.com/b12-spray/Page_1/497.html

D2 - http://veganstore.com/deva-vitamin-d2-2400-iu/Page_1/952.html

I take the B12 since I follow a vegan diet and 2 of the D2 because I was diagnosed with severe Vitamin D deficiency. Both of these are gluten-free. I couldn't find a Vitamin D in Whole Foods that was vegan and gluten-free, so I was very excited to find this at Pangea.

I have celiac disease, so I am more at risk for vitamin deficiencies. I had chronic migraines for 10 years that have virtually disappeared since I started the Vitamin D supplementation. It is worth getting your levels checked by a doctor.

I started taking Green Vibrance, a powder mixed in juice, as a supplement to help with not eating enough greens. It contains probiotics and has many vitamins also. Since I am older I thought I should take this. Is this ok?

I am just thinking of taking Green Vibrance as a smoothie add-on...anyone has any thought on this product???
