I gpt screwed...bad lunch choice???
Posted Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 4:02 AM

Jan. 4th, the 2nd day of 21 days kickstart...I got screwed. Went out to lunch, mexican restaurant...I thought I checked, and made sure there is no meat, no cheese, etc. and trying to stay with vegetable, and rice, and bean...

So, I looked the menu, there is nothing I could eat...only one...which is Rice, bean salad (in a taco ball)...so, I ordered.

It was tasting I have to say...but, on the way back home, I was thinking...this felt not really right...

rice, is white or jasmine rice, not brown rice...
bean, not sure how they cooked the bean...maybe adding lots butter??? using non-vegetable broth, etc.
and...
taco, looked like they deep fried???

and of course, I asked them to take out sour cream, cheese, and guacamole...which made me feel better...

I got screwed...what else could I eat when going out dining...at the mexican restaurant...

Sounds like you did what you could!

Sometimes I will ask how the beans and rice were cooked (type of broth). If those are okay, you can usually work a burrito or soft taco. If they can't make those, I will order flour or corn tortillas, side of veg beans, side of veg rice, sliced tomatoes, lettuce, salsa, hot sauce, and any other sides that are okay. Then I'll make my own burrito/soft taco.

If the restaurant cooks its beans and rice with meat or meat broth, then I will make a mental note to not come back. I think I've run into this problem only once in my 16 years of eating a vegan diet.

I too love mexican food. I go to a mexican restraunt where they know I am vegan and they will provide me with whatever food I ask for (made without animal products). I have had them mash fresh whole beans as the ones they make for the regular clientele has lard in it (although you would not know it). they also make me a great mixed veggie and potatoes. I order the homemade corn tortillas that are steamed and made my own "tacos". They are yummy and guilt free.

To be honest, I've stopped stressing too much over the "what ifs" in restaurant preparation and I personally am not the kind of person to give the wait person the third degree about how something is prepared (they usually have no clue anyway) and make demands about an order (I asked one wait person once to give me a sandwich that was vegan in every way but a sunny side up added to it and she refused saying, "but the egg is the whole point"). I try not to eat out too often and when I do, I just stick with keeping it vegan, regardless of how much fat there is or how the meal may have been prepared. I do check with the wait person to make sure what I'm ordering doesn't have any animal products in it but again, usually they are clueless about fine details (like whether something was fried in butter or not) so I take it with a grain of salt.

I think we can't be super-diligent in every situation and sometimes we simply have to trust our instincts and do the best that we can. I try to go for the least fatty vegan meal on the menu and adjust when I need to (such as asking for dressing on the side so I can control how much dressing goes on there) and if I know the meal has been pretty heavy fat-wise, I try to eat light the meal after that.

I have to agree w/Djuna on this one. There is only so much you can do when you are dining out so just give it your all and know that was your best.

One of the greatest gifts that come w/this lifestyle is knowing you have truly done your best and enjoying the sense of peace in that.

Enjoy,

I've actually found more and more tex-mex & mexican restaurants in my area offering veg-friendly options. One place I took off my list a long time ago actually has a vegetarian section on the menu now. Most of it is lacto-ovo, but they have veggie fajitas. A couple of places I think saute their veggies in butter, but you could probably ask to leave that off. Also, some places offer 2 or 3 types of beans (borrachos, refried & black beans). There's a decent chance one of those is lard/bacon free.

There are still a lot of popular mexican restaurants that rank low on my list for veg-reasons & my old fave is getting lower because of the vegan thing, but it gives me a chance to change our family-dining rut so that's a good thing, right?
