Crazy Cravings!
Posted Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 3:38 PM
Hi all, Well I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. The cravings have hit me full force today. I haven't given in to them but still it's a struggle, sigh. I'm treating it like the horrible cravings I had when I quit smoking. I have mental picture of what that burger will do to my arteries and keep telling myself that beef and fats are not my friends and they are actually out to kill me! I've been on this vegan journey for about 6 weeks now and this is the first time I've really had to struggle. So how do you all fight those nasty evil buggers?

I guess i am lucky.. for the most part i don't have them.. i sometimes think about a cheese pizza.. to get around the cravings the first and most important thing is not to be hungry. When i am not foraging for food i can eat healthy with no problems. Not hungry? no cravings. The next thing i do with a cheese pizza, instead of think about the lucious stringy chewy cheese.. i think about the pizza slices that i have gotten where i had to soak the grease off with a napkin. You know the grease that just sits on top of the pizza in puddles. (maybe it was from the pepperoni?) anyway it is gross. If those 2 things just delay my desire for a pizza.. i make one.. without the cheese. Lots of veggies i like & a good sauce. there is no bad pizza... even one without cheese. Then of course i feel BETTER after i eat it. Because i did indeed have pizza.. it was healthy.. i treated myself well.. i don't have that food hangover.. no need for a nap or guilt. On to the next meal. if you really want a burger.. make it your mission to make the best bean pattie ever.. keep trying recipes that look good until you find one. Then have some home-made sweet potato fries with it. When you pair with it what you like to eat the other food...it helps. Of course with meat you can watch the meet your meat vido.. or earthlings.. or think about the rendering plants and the amonina you eat w/your burgers. I like my bean pattie thankx!!

I did go to long between meals this morning. I was at bible study and there's always tons of food but most of it animal based! I had some fresh fruit but it didn't last long. After the study I had to go to the vet for my pet and then to the grocery store. So it was on the way home from the grocery store that the craving hit. I haven't seen those videos you mentioned. Ammonia in my meat?? ewww! lol maybe I should watch them! My niece is a nutritionist and she became vegan while she was still in school studying. She said we'd never touch meat if we "knew" all the things that go on! Thanks for your response...My tummy is full and the cravings are gone.

You know, after I eat fruit, I often feel hungrier than before I ate it. I have no clue as to why that is. Anyway, glad you're cravings are gone. BW Theodore

You know.. when i am around meat eaters and they feel the need to defend their choice to eat pizza, dairy, or meat.. they say I LIKE IT. it tastes good... sometimes i even agree with them. Yep it does taste good... i remember how it tastes.. i remember i liked it. Lets not get crazy.. we did like it.. and it might even taste good now.. but that doesn't mean i will eat it. There are a lot of things that are better for me that taste just as good. Those movies will change your life.. Meet your meat is on youtube. It's not real bad compared to many. My honey saw that, and as kind hearted as he is, that is when he decided to stop eating meat. Or at least it contributed to it greatly. Jamie Olivers food revolution is where i saw about the meat rendering plant. i know people who used to work as a butcher who will not touch meat. The more you know.. the less you want.

Molly, thanks for the links. I watched the trailer for earthlings. No way can I watch the full movie. Sad, and sick, very sick.

yeah i looked at the reviews for earthings and didn't even like what i read. There was no way i wanted those visions seared into my brain. meet your meat is more than enough..and no-where near as bad from what i can tell, but still something everyone should consider viewing.

I'm such a whimp, I only watched a little of the meet your meat...I've lost my appetite for chicken! I wondered why the chicken breast were so huge. Now I know. Even if you don't watch the video... It's so true what Dr. Bernard said in his book, 21-day Kickstart, we somehow equate "chicken" as a health food. It quite an eye opener to learn that a piece of lean beef and a boneless skinless chicken breast have close to the same amount of fat. This made my hubby kinda mad because his doctor keeps telling him to stick with lean chicken breast!

No, I'll ever want meat again. I'm a visual person so I won't ever need to see the video again, it's etched in my memory now.

Being hungry is definitely a way to get a craving. BUT if you do end up hungry, cuz sometimes you get stuck in traffic or whatever, try to identify what it is you want - not "cheeseburger" but detailed specifically "juicy", "warm", "smoky grilled", "crispness", "creamy melty", "salty", "chewy", etc. That makes it easier to fill the craving without going crazy. Same thing I do with my son if he's looking for a snack and doesn't know quite what he wants, just that he wants something. We do 'decision trees' - hot or cold? salty or sweet? and so on until we narrow in on something warm, salty, not crunchy...re-heated mac and "not cheese" and he's good to go. --Deb R
