I just got Veganomicon and made Cholent (stew). It was very satisfying ... my husband even ate two servings.

I wish this was the case with all the recipes I try! Some things just don't come out so well. Some of my cooking my husband doesn't even try; especially those with sweet potatoes...but that's another issue.

What cook books and web sites do you feel have the best recipes?

What do you think has helped you to become a better cook?

Do you use many meat substitutes?

Jean

Hi, Thanks for the tip on the cookbook. I hadn't heard of it before, but it looks like a great book.

I tend to like things pretty simple. I do a lot brown rice, fixed different ways, like spanish rice or asian vegetable fried rice, or just plain. I also don't do a lot of what my kids call "fake meat," although we do like it - it's just expensive.

I think hearty bean and legume dishes are key, like chili beans and lentil soups, and really, once you've made a few of those kinds of recipes, you know what tastes good to you and you don't even need recipes anymore for that kind of thing, you just throw stuff together.
I do use recipes, though, for new dishes.

Best wishes with your journey!

I'm like KIMCHAN I tend to just throw a lot of things together. I like brown rice fixed with different things, whole wheat pasta with tomatoes and other veggies. I eat a lot of salads with tons of veggies, beans, sometimes whole wheat pasta.

I do use some fake meats for convenience since hubby is not vegan. He likes most of the Gardein products and some of the Boca and Morningstar. I'd rather he eat those than the real thing.

I find good recipe ideas on www.fatfreevegan.com
I have a few Vegan cookbooks but many of the recipes are way more complicated than I really care to cook.

I don't have much good luck throwing stuff together. I can make stir-fry, veggie hash and a few other things. I make up lasagna and tamale pie differently every time. I don't really have enough vegan dishes to keep from getting bored though.

Hubby doesn't mind the vegan stuff, but he is still omni. If I make spaghetti without meat, he doesn't feel full. We like dried TVP in stews and chili quite well as long as there isn't too much. It makes the dish more hearty.

The frozen "crumbles" in the bag doesn't hold up...it kind of disolves.

I never had to really cook before, just make something to go along with whatever meat I was cooking. If I ate enough replacements, I could go back to that method! But how boring!

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's very interesting to hear about how you do this.

Most of the recipes I've tried are good,,did not like the seitan dish; will cut down on amt of ginger for Ginger Soba Noodles, but overall have enjoyed the new taste and textures of recipes found on the websites offered through the program.

I rec'd three new books for Christmas..do like the one from Good Housekeeping and the little pocket travel book called VEGAN A Go_GO! Love the humor too.

To be honest, I really try and adapt my own favorite meals as much as I can. Since I am such a vegetable and salad lover, its not hard to make that and experiment on the type of grains or legumes I add.

One of my personal favorite breakfast meals is: Saute veggies;(onion,potatoes,squash,red/yellow/orange peppers, red pepper flakes and basil till tender. Crumble or chop one black bean or mushroom soy burger, add to the mixture and heat through. Wrap mixture in a wholewheat Chappati or low carb wholewheat tortilla.
Serve w/ salsa if desired. YUM!

Sounds like you are on track..just be as creative as your feel with what you have on hand..who knows, it might be a winner for you, your family and your tastebuds. Smile

I love cookbooks so here are a few.

Any book by Christine Pirello especially "Cooking the Whole Foods Way" and "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Whole Foods"

Colleen Patrick Goudreau "The Vegan Table"

Robin Robertson "Vegan Planet"

When you need desserts

Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World"

I don't use a lot of meat substitutes, but once in a while I will use Annie's California Burger or one of the Gardien products.

Shanna loved the Vege Moms web site. Especially the "What any 4 year old could make" catagory. Thanks for the tip.

Also want to tell Gramma that I agree with you about the seitan dish. Im assuming you were talking about the Swiss Seitan dish? Im hoping that it wont turn me off to is forever.

I love "The Urban Vegan" by Dynise Balcavage, the Whole Foods web site has lots of great recipes and even Betty Crocker has a great vegetarian cook book with lots of vegan recipes in it. What I love about "The Urban Vegan" is that in the front of the book she lists substitutes that can be used for milk, dairy and eggs so that non-vegan recipes can be "translated" into vegan recipes.

Hooray, they fixed that anti-spam thing and I can finally log in. Missed you guys.

This recipe is so simple, and so yum! Making it again tonight. I'm finally putting the garam masala I bought a long time ago to use. Thank you so much Shanna! Gonna wow my bf.
