What do you do with them?
Posted Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 7:53 AM
So now we have all these veggie scraps. Has anyone considered what to do with them? I am considering trying composting in the spring. I would do it now, but i would like to build something with sides and wire.. then as i was told.. just throw the veggie scraps out there.... and compost happens..plain and simple.... yes you can speed it along by turning but it's going to happen if you turn it or not.. same with ph balance.....

We have a small metal compost bin in the kitchen to toss scraps into day by day. When that gets full, we take them out to the woods out back (still on our property) and just toss them out. We tried doing a regular compost to use on the garden but our garbage nose dog kept trying to mess with it. He can't get to the area where we dump the stuff. And some 'scraps' aren't 'scraps' so much - the heavy stems of broccoli (the part that's not so tender and tasty) shred up into a nice slaw addition; tops and peels of many veggies we toss into a freezer container until it gets full then make a soup stock with them (and then, once they're drained of everything, they get composted). --Deb R

I do vermiculture. Easier said? I have a worm bin. I put in all veggie scraps, coffee grounds (from guests), tea bags, no onions or garlic or animal products, along with my shredded paper, tissue, paper towels etc. (I have to add I don't use kleenex or paper towels any more but guests do) My bin has 3 tiers with fine holes in the bottom of each tray. It all drains down to a holding bin with a nozzle on the bottom. As the worms eat through all of input the liquid goes into the bottom tray and that is called 'compost tea' ~ plants go crazy for it! What the worms leave behind is black and rich, compost. This can then be worked into the soil of your plants. I have been using vermiculture for about 15 years now. I put all my scraps in a bowl and at the end of meal prep I take it out and put it in my bin. I also shred all my mail then compost it. The worms have never stolen my identity, I had an amazing garden before I moved, my house plants love the compost tea and after I put everything else I can in the recycle bin, I only had a tiny trash can and it was picked up about every 3 - 4 weeks. Wonderful!! Oh, when I bought my worm bin, I also bought a bag of red wiggler worms, they have lasted all these years, they are well fed and keep breeding. I give them plenty of food, protection from heat and wild animals. I would say I invested about $150.00 total over the years.

"We also get a blue bin for newspapers and they recently introduced a black bin for investment portfolios." haha Theodore, you crack me up! We try to recycle most everything. I don't usually have to many vegetable things that need to be tossed out, but at this point I still put them in the garbage, or yard bins depending on what they are. I have thought about a small composter, but I'm no where near implementing the thoughts!

Oceandog.. very interesting.. did you buy this contraption or make it yourself? i assume the worms live in the penthouse..? silly question, but since they would not be "in the ground" if that is true do you put some wool in there during the winter.. or buy silk worms.. hey why not have our worms eat our garbage and make silk for us too!! no...seriously.. how big is it? can i use it in the winter? would you include a picture?

I use mine year round and have had this current one since around 2002 or 2003. Here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/Triformis-Can-O-Worms-Composter/dp/B003I81IAM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1294777038&sr=8-2 I keep mine in the garage, near the kitchen door. Unfortunately, silk worms don't produce the same results! haha since I have never learned to spin nor weave, I stick to compost making worms as I love to garden. Honestly, I can't imagine living without one. I have 2 at this time. When I moved to the Bay Area (California) with my sister, I joined a yahoo group called Freecycle. Someone on there had gone to a community sponsored class on vermiculture and was given a free bin!! He decided not to use it and put it on Freecycle, I emailed and now have 2. So here is an interesting thing ~ note to the squeamish STOP reading here ~ if you have one dedicated SOLEY to food, you can also have one dedicated SOLEY to dog waste. The "compost" from the dog bin must not be used on food crops but can be used on flowers and such. The bin from food can be used on food crops. These 2 bins must be kept separate as the worms will not clean up after dogs if they have fruit and veggies as a choice! Can't say I blame them! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me. Ready for another off topic story? Tee hee....well many moons ago... I used to work for the Department of Corrections (prison) as a Correctional Office (guard) and my partners and I implemented a worm bin (humongous) there. We used it for food waste and confidential shredded paper. I have no idea if it is still in use, but the idea when I worked there was to not put so much in the landfill and the compost the worms made could be sold as a way to offset the costs of prison life. Now that you all know way more about me than you desired.... Also, ch22 (Cynthia?) and Molly .... I LOVE the pix of you two! It is nice to put a face to your posts. I will have to see if I can scrounge up one and post it as well. Funny now we get an idea of what each other looks like!

Yes I saw that also... but then again you haven't seen a pix, maybe I could still pass as a he?

Hey cch22, I guess it depends on how 'scrappy' your scraps are! We have a compost bin out back for cores and peels. But when it comes to stems and chunks of things that I don't want to steam or put in a salad, I chop up and throw in my pressure cooker soup. I just toss these chunks into a container in the fridge for the next time I make soup! Lani Facebook

My husband is compost king (He travels and I put the scraps down the disposal). Anyway we save scraps in an old tupperware container in the kitchen. He brings them out to a five gallon pail thats sealed in our garage. When that gets full it goes into a garbage can that has holes in the bottom. Everytime it gets dumped he puts a layer of leaves, twigs, shredded paper or newspaper. In the spring he spreads it in the garden and turn over the soil. Easy except for the smell.
