Since the dairy and egg industries are subsidized by the federal government, these are very affordable protein sources. Many people rely on them because they can "get a lot for their money," as far as protein-per-calorie. For example, in my town you can get a gallon of milk for $2.19, while the plant-based milks sell at $2.99 or $3.99 for a half-gallon (and contain less protein). So, I can understand what this person meant. They may not be aware of some of the more affordable vegan protein sources. Perhaps you or another poster could use this opportunity to gracefully educate them on how veganism can be more affordable than omnivorism, both in immediate grocery bills and in long-term health consequences.
