Recipe Notebook Idea
Posted Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 8:30 PM

Hi Vegan Friends,

Thought I'd share with you my Recipe Notebook idea I'm working on...

I don't know about you, but I forget things easily these days. So here's what I'm doing.......

I'm copying all my recipes (I've posted some of my homemade soup recipes on this forum under "vegan soups"), typing them on my computer and adding some cute clip-art. Printing them out, slipping into the 8 12" x 11" plastic sheet covers and then putting into a 3-ring binder. Will use some of the 3-ring binder tabs to label and separate the sections.

I'm also making some pages with "simple" Breakfast, Lunch and Dinners ideas.

***** For instance: the other night we just baked a couple of potatoes for dinner. I made a package of vegan brown gravy mix and added some fresh sliced mushrooms. Cut potato in half and poured the gravy/mushroom mixture on top. Served with some fresh steamed veggies. My non-veg husband loved it and didn't realize the gravy was "vegan".(I used a brown gravy mix by "Hain" that I had got at the Health Food Market)

Will make notes on the recipes that my non-vegan husband really likes and recipes that went over good with family, friends and company. I'm thinking of adding pages listing some of our favorite recipes from my cookbooks too. Recording the Name of the Cookbook, recipe and page number.

I've been trying & making so many new things lately, that I want to make sure I don't forget the good ideas and our favorite recipes. Then when I'm trying to figure out what to eat or make for a meal later on, it will be handy and easy to find.

I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any additonal ideas.

Good idea. I have a couple folders on my computer. Recipes I've tried and liked, recipes I want to try, recipes I want to alter to vegan. Printing them into a note book would save me from having to find and print each time I want to cook.

Love the gravy over potato idea. I don't even like gravy but over potatos sounds great!

Im with you on the receipe folder. I have one also that is organized by catagory. It is so much easier to find receipes. With all the great vegan receipes Ive aquired I am going to have to start a new one!

I started to do something similar but I am going one step farther and keeping a file on my computer and a disk copy in case my computer crashes. Especially because I will remember making a recipe that has one ingredient and not remember what it is called so now I can search that ingredient. LOL

Thank you for sharing the idea! Are you also a scrape booker? Sorry I clicked save before adding this to my last post! Sad

In answer to your question, Jeannie

Are you also a scrape booker? Sorry I clicked save before adding this to my last post

No, I'm not a scrapbooker. Sad My sister's into it, and I've thought about it but, I already have a lot invested in my hobbie of many years...."Quilting" Smile

I've always done all kinds of crafts etc. and have done a little scrapbooking. I think I'll just stick to my "clip-art" on the computer for now for my recipe book.

Are you? I'm sure you could get really creative with a recipe book. If you make one, I'd love to see pictures

I HAVE DABBLED IN JUST ABOUT ANY CRAFT YOU CAN NAME.
I HAVE EVEN MADE A FEW QUILTS!
RIGHT NOW I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS VEGAN-ISM AND FEEL SO GOOD THAT I HAVE JUST BEEN DOING A NOTEBOOK MUCH LIKE YOU BUT I TOOK A COMPUTER CLASS SO I AM MAKING A POWER POINT FILE WITH PICS OF THE FOODS ETC. IT IS KIND OF FUN WATCHING THE RECIPES (AND PICS) AS A SLIDE SHOW THEN DECIDE WHAT TO MAKE.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I LIVE IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF CT.

ON ANOTHER NOTE HAVE YOU TRIED HEMP HEARTS OR CHIA SEEDS? A GREAT SOURCE OF PROTEIN AND ESSENTIAL ACCIDS ETC.

RE: Chia Seeds - I've been very curious about these. I meant to get some last time I went to WF, but I forgot. The only recipe I have for them is the Raw Chocolate Chia Energy Bars recipe from last month's Vegetarian Times. What do they taste like? How do you use them?

Also - I love the notebook idea. I had sort of started one a long time ago but I never really organized it and eventually abandoned it. (my stack of printed or cut, but never tried recipes is way larger than the binder anyways)

Reading your post has inspired me to find it, pretty it up, start categories, sort through the stacks and recycle all the non-vegan stuff. I'm putting that on my list right after steam cleaning and homework!

Hey Craftycat,
I've printed out the recipes I liked as well, never thought of putting them in a folder, duh!! Shocked Great idea. Talk about CRS. Loving being vegan. Just wondered why it took me so long to go from a vegetarian (20 yrs) to a vegan. Ummmm.

The Chia seeds and Hemp hearts are actually in a cereal called Chia Goodness, I get it at my local health food store. There are several sites to order from but this particular on is found at www.ruthshempfoods.com

I am sorry I did not respond sooner soooo busy with grand kids Very Happy and then computer problems. but ok now.

Tempeh Tostadas from Breaking the Food Seduction
Posted Friday, February 19, 2010 at 8:19 AM

Had these last night, from Dr. Barnard's book Breaking the Food Seduction. Very tasty!

http://books.google.com/books?id=VixE_PWeqbYC&lpg=PA247&ots=4wKHS3JMuk&dq=neal%20barnard%20tempeh%20tostada&pg=PA247#v=onepage&q=&f=false

Notes: The recipe actually makes tacos, not tostadas. But I baked the tortillas (same method as the baked tortilla chips from the plan, just in whole circles) so they'd be actual tostadas. Smile Also, if you are used to eating low-sodium style, you might want to cut the soy sauce in half. I used reduced sodium tamari and it was still a little overly salty to me. For others that may not be an issue.

They're great, and very easy.

The topping combos make them endlessly variable. We'll be making these a lot. We used shredded lettuce/red cabbage/carrot (from a leftover salad), avocado, green salsa, and chopped tomatoes.

My husband really liked them. He ate 3.

Enjoy!
