Mommyof2, You're absolutely right about the conservatism. This country would rather recommend life-threatening surgery as a weight loss tool over a vegan diet... that is beyond me. It wasn't that long ago that I was a meat eater, but once I had the wool pulled away from my eyes, there was no turning back. I could never go back to meat now – not knowing about the horrors of animal agriculture, the contributions to global warming, and the outright suffering our non-human cohabitants endure. (Sorry, soapbox!) Anyhow, you're totally right that more doctors should recommend this diet! I wish I could afford to provide every doctor's waiting room with free copies of Drs. Barnard, Esselstyn, and McDougall's books.

Hi All, I got my blood work results.. I had everything tested, including c reactive, b, iron, sugar, liver, etc. The big one for me has always been choresterol. Without meds mine has been as high as 400. So for a couple of years i have been on simvestatin 40mg.. and of course now since sept i have been eating mostly vegan.. i'd say 95%.... anyway doc says my choresterol is 170. It is low, but i was disappointed. I wanted it below 150. He said don't be disappointed because the breakdown is good.. My good choreserol is 87 and my bad is 85. So i have more good than bad.. he said i could brag about it... I don't think it is brag worthy.. because from what i read most people who have heart attacks have choresterol between 150-200. Seems i am right in that range.. Anyway.. i asked if for 3 months we could try going down to 20mg simvestatin... just to see what happens.. he thought we should leave things alone but agreed to honor my request. Hey it's only 3 months before another test right? On another note.. i eat like baby huey.. and i have lost 15lbs.. happy about that. I just decided to stop wearing the bigger pants (size 14), put them away and wear only the 12's... hey when you can pull your pants down over your hips without unbuttoning them, its time to call it. lol.. thanks for listening.. cynthia

Even if the numbers aren't right where you want them, I think you should brag about the improvement. You ARE headed in the right direction. Congratulations.

For women, HDL should be >50 so 87 is awesome. LDL should be <100 for best results and again, yours is great. My total cholesterol is just ignored by my doctor because the individual numbers are really good, like yours. Total cholesterol also includes other things in some arcane formula (I asked my doctor about it once because the total didn't equal HDL+LDL). Instead of looking at the arcane total, my doctor and I look at HDL, LDL, triglycerides and so on and keep an eye on making sure they're all in the target range. Deb R

Thanks for the info about blood work. I just switched doctors and I did tell her I've been vegan for almost 2 years. She had the opposite reaction to Theodore's warning - she said that was absolutely wonderful and is a perfectly healthy way to live. She said as long as I was taking a b12 supplement (which I am) than I'm totally fine. I do feel healthy, but I also acknowledge that I don't know everything about nutrition and if my iron or vitamin D levels are low, I think its important to know about it. So I asked if I could get my bloodwork done - my new doctor suggested a lipid profile and a thyroid test just for kicks - but I guess I should ask more directly for the tests Molly recommended: Fasting Blood Glucose Fasting Cholesterol (full lipid panel) Triglycerides B-12 Iron Calcium Vitamin D Anyone else doubting their doctor's nutritional expertise? No matter what you eat, everyone can always be doing something to improve their health and diet, right? PT

Actually, our GP pointed us in this direction some years back - not deliberately toward vegan but he suggested that before he put hubby on blood pressure meds he wanted us to try the DASH plan (dietary approach to stop hypertension). The DASH plan does include meat, fish, dairy, eggs BUT it focuses on using those sparingly and increasing fruit, veggies, whole grains. So, we started cutting out red meat, cutting back on fish and poultry, eliminated eggs and liquid milk (still had dairy products like cheese and yogurt), and increasing our use of beans and whole grains and veggies. While hubby did eventually need medication (for the genetic side of hypertension), we started down the path of gradually removing animal products and ended up here. Our GP knows we're mostly vegan (we slip occasionally and sometimes there aren't many options, but we're getting better at dealing with those situations) and has no problem with it - it rarely comes up these days. --DebR
