ate cheese today... a question
Posted Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 1:27 AM
Hi everyone, I have been doing so well - no cheating and not missing cheese and dairy as I thought I would. So 12 days without. Then I was at a lunch today where I ate a Roasted Vegetable sandwiche that had some cheese on it. This was the only vegetarian option available (not even fruit) and it was one those formal lunches where I didn't feel like I could ask for another option. It would have been rude to not eat at all. Anyway I felt unwell for a couple of hours after lunch (a bit nauseated). Is it possible that my body is reacting to having cheese after only 12 days without and not liking it? Or am I imagining it because I know I should not be eating cheese.

It was probably the high fat in the sandwich that made you feel unwell. Your body's way of saying do not feed me this greasy stuff.

Probably the high fat was a shock to the system. Statistically speaking, odds are you are lactose intolerant (or more accurately, NOT lactose tolerant), and you didn't even know it. It's possible that the previous days without dairy and then one hit to the system sent that message very clearly. I can't tell you how many times I have heard people say they didn't even know dairy upset their stomach until they quit eating it.

Thanks for the replies. It will be easy to stay away from cheese now - I just have to think about feeling nauseated and I don't want the stuff. I am not sure if it is related to lactose intolerance but I was allergic to cows milk as a child and this was one of the foods that made my asthma worse. My parents swapped me to goats milk and I was raised on that until I was old enough to wean myself off all milk by saying I didnt want it, didn't like it (I think around 8 years old). Even prior to the kickstart I could not/would not drink milk of any kind as I have a real adversion to it and hate the taste. I have been having it in products though e.g. baking or mashed potatoes and did not have a problem, or so I thought. Now I am wondering if it relates to other health issues I have had through the years such as regular sinus problems. Food for thought...

I slipped up last night too. I wanted to make vegetable tempura with steamed rice. The batter called for 1 egg So I guess I ingested some egg, but the tempura was very good. The recipe made a lot of tempura for all of us, so I don't think i had a huge amount of egg, but still--it's the principle, right?? By the way, this is a vegan kickstart, or oil free vegan? I am using oils, but am getting the idea that it's supposed to be a fat free challenge as well? My stove/oven is on the blink right now (a total drag!) So I have been using my wok alot for stir frys, and also have done some sweet potato fries, felafel, etc. So far I have not experienced any upset stomach or adverse reaction to the oil. Of course I drain everything thoroughly. Have a great weekend!

Hi Pam, I have been using some oils although not lots. For myself, I am concentrating on the vegan part rather than the low fat - although my fat intake is lower than it was before the kickstart because the trash is gone from my diet (regular potato chips, fries, cakes). I probably won't loose as much weight as some of the others participating but I am still feeling a lot better. As for the egg, if you are making the batter yourself and have a choice, try 'No egg- Natural egg replacer' if you can get it or a similar product. I have used in in cooking for some time now and it works fine. I can't tell the difference in the end product. Although not vegan until now I don't eat eggs on their own - used to vomit on them as a child and I don't like the taste - so I stopped buying them for cooking some time ago. They would sit in the refrigerator for so long I ended up throwing most away and decided it was a waste of money. Come to think of it, with this egg and cheese business, I now think my body has been telling me I should be vegan for years but I wan't listening. Now at 49 I have finally heard what it is saying. Hi Kiwi, I will look for that egg replacer product. I grew up eating eggs, so I still like them. I don't miss them so far on the kickstart, which is good. I also like cheese, but am fine w/o it so far. But I know what you mean about feeling better on a vegan plan. When this is over I will assess my diet and definitely watch the amt. of eggs/cheese that I incorporate back into my diet. I have found good substitutes for them so far, and don't need to rush out a buy it again. Even tho they aren't "pure" I really like some of the vegan fake meat products available. I had some "ribs" and they were real good, along with rice/veggies for dinner one night.

Not cheating here, but have to deal with a roomy that lives on processed foods. Thinking back how bad I felt from august last year to late december. I want nothing more than to feel this awesome all year round. Even if it affects others around me, they should have an understanding.

Cheese was the HARDEST thing for me to give up! Cheesaholic here - it was in every sandwich, potato, omlette, salad etc. After 6 mos, and it was totally off my radar, I decided to look for a vegan alternative. Found one in cheddar and mozzarella in a local non-chain market. Buy occassionally, only when on sale, and consider it a treat. While only 6% fat, it's fat I don't need, and believe me I could eat this stuff every day! http://www.followyourheart.com. Under products, click on vegan gourmet. Wish the store would carry the nacho flavor!

If you eat the entire jar it's only 160 calories.. way good.. we have made nachos.. and cheesy fries.. and bean burger with cheese so far... http://fatgoblin.com/

@cch22 - Looks wonderful, and with those reviews, how could it not be?! Sadly, no retailer listed in WA is closer than 1.5 hrs. away, so will see if I can convince a SMALL local non-chain market or Safeway to consider giving it a test. While the non-chain store offers a much better bulk food section, many more cruelty free personal items, and more local and organic produce, I think Safeway would be able to offer a better price. Do any of you sometimes feel that the "vegan" option of some items you'd like to try is prohibitive due to the cost? For example, while I love Amy's soups (use them occasionally as base for veggie dishes, the 8-pk - lentil & minestrone - is a great price at Costco but not on the store shelf), the only vegan pizza of Amy's offered at Safeway is $8.99, while Amy's other same size pizzas, using cheese, are only $5.99. Sigh... Glad I use so very few packaged items.

I've got some "homemade" hummus recipes in cookbooks, but I've compared the cost of buying the individual ingredients with a hummus that my Costco carries, and Costco's offering is definitely less expensive, not to mention timesaving! The brand is Meza, traditional style, and a 30-oz container is $4.85. QFC has an 8-oz container for $3.89! I like it compared to others because it has a more tangy flavor. It's my "mayo" for sandwiches(DEFINITELY lower fat and healthier than Veganaise!), a chip dip, along as a baked potato addition. Chips, rarely eat even the Lay's baked original or Sunchips original offered at work (Subway). Don't eat these crackers often, but here are my favs. Main staple is: http://www.foodshouldtastegood.com/#/home. Have to pick the vegan ones, but eat the multi and sweet potato choices. Also, just tried Garden of Eatin's Multigrain Blues' (had a coupon so incentive!) all natural tortilla chips with sea salt, and they were delicious with my hummus! http://www.gardenofeatin.com. Don't want to forget another fav, when it's on sale: http://www.terrachips.com. Have never gotten beyond the original because I LOVE them, and just a few will take care of any crunch or craving need! LOVE new discoveries!

[quote="2meowers"]@cch22 - Do any of you sometimes feel that the "vegan" option of some items you'd like to try is prohibitive due to the cost? I agree that some items become prohibitive because of cost and find that in NZ it is not just vegan products but also the vegetarian replacement items such as soy 'meat' replacement that are expensive. The good news is that there is a much wider range of products available than say 5 years ago. My own grocery bill has gotten larger these past 2 weeks because I am buying different things to try. I will have to do better in the long term and consider some items occasional treats or wait for the sale items as I definately cannot afford to do this all the time.
It's a compromise really as I do want to support the manufacturers that are producing these products as much as possible by purchasing what I can afford, so they keep producing good food choices. I also think its better to be healthy and spend my money now on good food than on doctors because I am unwell. But I need to keep my bank manager happy as well

@kiwi - Don't mean to sound like, or ask you to be, a "brown noser", but I e-mail mfgrs. of products I use to let them know I appreciate their product, and suggest they put the word "vegan" as the first word after "ingredients:" on the back, or put the word "Vegan" on the front in a prominent place (after I've determined the product meets vegan criteria.) I tell them that I like their product and hate reading labels, and companies like Amy's make it easy for me to select a product at a quick glance. Suggest they change their packaging to reflect this fact. Have received free coupons and encouraging e-mails back!

you know the ones i can't figure out.. i assume white flour is processed more than unbleached flour.. so why does unbleached flour cost more? also the same with sugar.. if i buy my sugar unrefined..raw.. why does it cost more? less work, less machines, sooner in the bag.. sooner for them to get their money... the puchases that really set me back are the tahini paste at 8.99 a jar. I only use a couple of tablespoons at a time.. but stocking the house with products like these can get pricy. then there is miso! i almost fell over when i saw a small bag for $10.00.. although i hear i should check other places for other types.

We use the not cheese recipe that we got here on the kickstart forum - that Nacho Mom stuff looks interesting but doesn't exist in CT (I looked at the where to buy and there's not even one store in the state!) The recipe uses cashews (or cashew butter), nutritional yeast, roasted red pepper (for color, sometimes we leave them out for a more alfredo like sauce), and some seasonings. Really simple. And even though a container of cashew butter is somewhat costly, we can get 3 or 4 batches of the cheez sauce from one container. Nutritional yeast is becoming a staple kitchen ingredient like vanilla or cumin. I generally look at the trade offs and quantities involved - I'll buy traditionally grown bananas and save a bit so as to purchase organically grown kale (for example). If I spend $9 for cashew butter that makes 4 meals' worth of cheez sauce, that's $2.25 per recipe - an equivalent amount of cheddar would probably be at least that. So, yeah, while some things look expensive, I try to compare price and quantity with what I might otherwise buy and it ends up a draw a lot of the times. Then too I also consider what the additional medication would cost if hubby and I had to increase/add medications for our health situations. Spending $2.25 per meal for cashew butter is a lot cheaper than prescription meds! --Deb R
