Send us your Success Stories!
Posted Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 12:09 PM

Hello to all the new Kickstarters and a special nod to the alumni. PCRM has received so many letters detailing people's successes on a low-fat, vegan diet. I know many stories have been posted right here on the forum, by you. But we would like for more people to be able to read your stories outside of this forum.

So, if you are willing, and you have had success on the Kickstart or eating a healthful, plant-based diet, would you please send us your story and a photograph (before and after or just after is fine!)?

You can send your story (some of you could probably just cut and paste from your posts), your photograph(s), your name (first name at least), email, and your city/state to our nutrition intern, Sarah Kalamchi at skalamchi@pcrm.org. You would need to be okay to have this posted on our Website or any of our various publications.

Thanks everybody! Your stories will continue to inspire even more people.

PCRM Director of Nutrition Education

Hi Kickstarters:
Although I started the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart program September 5th, this is really my second go around. I actually became a vegan after hearing Dr. Barnard lecture on our local PBS station in Philadelphia. You see, I have had diabetes for thirty-three years (gestational to start, which never went away). I have never been able to lose weight, many physicians I went to did not believe I was eating "right". Sometimes I didn't. But I tried and tried. I have probably lost 1500 pounds...again and again and again. I have had a heart attack, had a leg amputated(due to a reaction to Heparin after bypass surgery) and then had a stroke six months ago. So you see, I covered all the bases. I was taking twenty pills a day and my blood sugars were soaring upward and more and more insulin was needed throughout the day.

Now on to the good part. After hearing Dr. Barnard give his lecture on Reversing Diabetes, that was it. I truly said, this physician kn ows what he is talking about. That night, at two in the morning, I made a commitment to myself and a promise that I would try this new idea (to me) and see where it went.

Well I tell you, I have never felt so good. My blood sugars have dropped dramatically, I have just about cut my insulin in half and I am currently down to taking nine pills a day. My goal is one. To my surprise, I have great energy, have lost sixteen pounds and am committed to eating vegan for the rest of my life. I want to get active in a vegan organization and meet other vegans. My husband has also started eating this way and loves it. So it's a win win situation. I am ever grateful to Dr. Barnard for helping me get on the right path and I look forward to learning and perhaps teaching others what a wonderful life one can have being happy, healthy and maybe a little bit wiser.

That is a fabulous success story!

Mine isn't quite so dramatic. I actually went vegan a little over 2 months ago. I'd been vegetarian on-and-off for the past 10 years & one of my bff's was also veg. She had been suffering with ulcerative colitis & diabetes, so she decided to go vegan, and being an excellent friend, I decided to join her.
May I just say...wow! I started at 310 lbs.; the number I saw on the scale Monday is 280. My whole body feels alive & energetic, and the er... output... is amazing. Best of all, I feel content. Always before, after dinner, I'd still be poking around for something to eat. Some of that is emotional eating, and I still catch myself doing that a bit, but a lot of it must have been my body asking for real nourishment. At last I finish a meal and feel FED. What can I say, vegan rocks!

My fiancé and I started the 21-day program on June 20th and we have both become converts to vegetarian living, not only because we love being lighter on our feet, and not just because we have become keen gardeners as a consequence of being able to really taste our food again, but mainly because we feel we are cooking with love for the first time in our lives. Meat and dairy were a convenience foods for us, and now that we have kicked the habit, we also naturally stopped drinking alcohol and coffee.
Our lives are full of joy and love, and it is rubbing off on our friends and relatives, who watch us with interest as we lose weight and become brighter and more active day by day, week by week, and month by month.
Thank you Dr. Barnard and PCRM for shining the light onto our lives that is guiding us into our future.
Our results: my starting weight 186 lbs. / weight this morning 167 lbs.
My fiancés starting weight 139 lbs./ weight this morning 127 lbs.
We both pop out of bed at sunrise with smiles on our faces, and look forward to each new day more than ever.
I highly recommend the 21-day Vegan Kickstart to anyone wanting to turn their lives around for once and for all.

well I consider myself to be a success but I was hwp before I became a vegan. Are you only interested in weight loss?

lucky you. But some have had the added encouragement of losing weight in addition to being healthier, happier and content. No matter why we become vegans...it's a win win situation!

I'M REALLY SORRY TO HEAR THAT. ONE THING I DO (AND I THINK IT HELPS ALOT), I TRACK EVERYTHING I EAT. THERE IS AN APP AND A WEB SITE CALLED SPARK PEOPLE. YOU CAN KEEP TRACK OF EVERYTHING YOU EAT. LET ME KNOW IF THIS HELPS. GOOD LUCK!!!

Laughing I'm absolutely thrilled with how much fun I've had following the tips and recipes on the first two weeks of this kickstart! Even been adventurous and creative on my own too because of all the success I've had in creating dishes which are vegan and yummy! Biggest shocker is how many of my creations my 'meat and dairy' obsessed husband has enjoyed (Fakin Bakin for example). Even eating out with the family (who eats so much fatty, fried, horrible foods) has been good! I find myself ordering side dishes of avocado and tomato and corn tortillas and making a dish that suits me. Didn't even get embarrassed when asking Mexican restaurants if their beans were made with lard! Found one who specifically made separate beans for vegetarians and they were scrumptious! I often carry a green smoothy made with kale with me if I know we all may be going to eat somewhere that has limited choices for my new Happy Vegan lifestyle! Thank you for this wonderful kickstart! I have found and embraced a lifestyle I can live with for the rest of my life. As an added bonus, my meals are so colorful and appealing, I take numerous photos and put them on my Facebook page and friends BEG me for the recipes! I then direct them to 21-day QuickStart! Thanks again for my new life!

I am going to echo what lorirobin said. I feel like I've found a new lease on life. (again) Twenty-two years ago (when my husband had a brain malignant brain tumor), I became a Certified Kushi Macrobiotic cook and teacher. I came away from it and have suffered ever since with health problems and other issues. But since finding the 21Day Kickstart program, I feel like I've come home. I've even been asked to start up my cooking classes again. I'm so excited about this. I'm excited to share the wonderful things that can happen to your body and life when you eat this way. My husband, loves eating like this...it's contagious! Thanks so much, Kickstart, for helping to get me back on the RIGHT track. choo choo.

Hi everyone,

It's great to hear accounts of how a plant based, low fat diet is improving so many lives!

I shifted to a vegan diet almost three years ago, when I was diagnosed with an aggressive, but (thank God) early stage breast cancer. Since I had been a pesco-lacto vegetarian pretty much since my teens, hardly drank any alcohol, didn't smoke and was in great shape (or so I thought) it really came as a shock to me. I thought I had been doing everything right! The surgery and treatment went well and my doctors told me that the prognosis was excellent and to go on living as usual. But that wasn't good enough for me - after all the disease had developed when I was living "as usual".

So, I started researching how to best avoid a recurrence, which led me to places like The Cancer Project on the PCRM website and to Dr Campbell's book The China Study, which had a tremendous impact on me. I immediately eliminated dairy and fish, switched to low fat and became very aware of the nutritional content of everything I put into my mouth.

Well, the results have been amazing. I look (or so my dear friends say anyway) and feel better than before my diagnosis, I have enormous amounts of energy and even though I had a premature menopause, I have hardly experienced any of the usual symptoms. The fact that it is a cruel free and sustainable diet makes me feel even better. And, not least, I know that every day, with every meal, I am helping my body fight disease and stay healthy.

I wish that the science behind this type of diet became more widely known, as I am sure that it would help a great many people who have been challenged with cancer.

I've been wanting to start this for about a year. After seeing Forks over Knives...I decided it was time. I've been vegetarian for a few years but giving up dairy wasn't easy...because it is everywhere....and my friends and family would always serve cheese because I'm vegetarian..
Explaining to them that I no longer eat dairy makes them shake their heads but they'll get used to it.
I feel soooooo healthy!
thank you!!!!!!!!!!

So far on the Kickstart... a lifetime of GERD has stopped completely, I have lost about 3 lbs, and my perimenopausal hot flashes have stopped.

Well, a new doc, Arti Prasad MD at the Univ of New Mexico Center for Life suggested this diet to me after I visited with her asking for what I could do to best my health. I was already lacto-ovo, and ditching the diary and eggs ...has been good. I've lost 3 lbs and will see when new blood work in done in a few months if my a1c has gone down (it was 6.1) .... been trying for ages to get off blood pressure meds.... have already reduced the beta blocker. Will see in a few months if that is possible or not. Thanks for the kickstart. ....had been reading Ornish, China Study, etc trying to get back on track. Thank you for your good work and congratulations everyone!

Crying or Very sadYes those are sad tears that the kickstart is nearing its end. I love the daily emails. I love the community boards and all the encouragement and support.

When I started the kickstart 18 days ago I wasn't very confident that I would be successful (I live with a meat-eating caveman and teenage triplets that subscribe to his eating philosophy) and this was a big departure from my normal way of eating (high protein). But I have learned to cook new recipes that have introduced me to new foods, the guilt(from eating meat) is gone and I'm able to keep my carnivores happy with a piece of meat on the side (and I have no desire to eat it).

I started feeling really good almost immediately after I started on Day 1 - more energy, better focus and a calm that normally is missing in my stress filled life. I can only attribute all of it to this new and wonderful way of eating. Is it easy, no, but it's not hard either. It takes a bit of effort to make sure that appropriate foods are available in the house but the rewards are great!

What am I going to do without my daily emails and words of encouragement? Sad
