I can't recommend a brand because I just don't know enough about them but I can tell you that they are expensive and if money is an issue you might want to consider doing what I did and getting one at the Goodwill or Salvation Army. Food processors are one of those appliances that many people either buy or receive for weddings but then hardly if ever use so they show up a LOT in second hand stores and they tend to be in very good shape. At least here in Seattle anyway. I've had mine for 3 or 4 years now and have used it extensively and it's still plodding along just fine.

Now that we are eating not just vegan, but whole unprocessed foods, I find we use our small appliances more often and if you don't have them to start off with, buying them can be prohibitively expensive. So I get them used if at all possible. That is is also how I've gotten a very nice rice cooker for brown rice, a double decker steamer, a food dehydrator for fruit and vegetable leather, as well as an industrial Waring blender strong enough to puree a Volkswagen.

I have a Cuisinart Prep 7 7-cup Food Processor. I got it on sale at Macy's, and paid around $120 after tax. I bought through Macy's rather than Amazon, despite Amazon being a little cheaper, because I wanted to be able to return it if necessary. Returns through Amazon are nearly impossible.

I love this machine and use it at least once a week, usually 2-3 times or more. The only downside to processors is that they are a pain to clean, so I usually save all my stuff for one day and do it all at once, so that I can just rinse between recipes and then do one thorough wash at the end. But you probably knew that already. Very Happy

To see this model in action, check out Jennifer Cornbleet's videos on Youtube. (you can click the links in the right sidebar to find all of them) She uses the same model I have, except hers isn't the "Prep" version. Don't be intimidated by its huge size in the video – she's just a tiny, tiny person!!! I promise irl it's a much more manageable size. Wink

Though you didn't ask, I also recommend the Kitchenaid 5-Speed Blender. It's a classic and a workhorse. Runs about $100 and is great for those who can't afford a Vitamix!

I have a Vitamix and have been using it for about 15 years, couldn't live without it. They are expensive but in my opinion, well worth the price.
Great for whole juices, soups, hummus, vegan ice cream. I even used to make bread from wheat berries grinding into flour to the kneading, I must admit that I no longer do this, I have a bread machine and use whole wheat flour.

i have the cuisninart 7 cup too... it is Wonderful!! i can't say enough good things about it.. in fact it rates counter space in a small kitchen... you won't be disappointed with it... I also got a cusinart stick blender that does wonders on some of these soups.

Thanks for the replies. I have been chopping and shredding everything by hand and I am done with that, uggg! I wanted to make sure we would stick with this before I bought another "hidden" under my cabinets appliance.

Ditto, my Cuisinart warrants permanent counter space in my teeny-tiny kitchen. But that might be cause I have only three cabinets. Wink

One thing i always look at when i buy an appliance is all the little parts i have to store that go along with it.

if you get the cuisinart... might i suggest you consider purchasing... a Blade & Disc holder? It is great.. the parts fit in perfectly.. I know where everything is . very convenient. i don't get cut looking for parts in the drawer. .. it is well worth the 20.00.. yep it sits right beside the food processor. it doesn't take up much room.

We've got multiple "chopper" type things. We've got a good heavy food processor (we killed the old one so now we've got a good solid one - I think it might be the Cuisinart that everyone's already mentioned). That's the one we use for things like hummus (since we make BATCHES of it, not servings of it).

We've also got a Pampered Chef manual food processor - the mechanism is similar to ye olde salad spinner with a blade that spins as you pump the handle. It's great for smaller quantities of stuff - we'll clean and quarter a bell pepper, half an onion, a can of diced tomatoes, and appropriate spices, give it a few spins (up to about 2 dozen depending...) and voila, fresh salsa with minimal cleanup (that's the one thing about the big food processor, it's a lot bulkier to clean up when we're only doing small batches of something like one meal's worth of salsa)

And, we've got a good quality (and actually fairly inexpensive as things go) seed grinder (handles coffee beans, flax seeds, nuts, etc). I never imagined that we'd use something like this so often since we don't drink coffee. But, it gets used at least once a week if not more often - we've gotten used to using ground flax seeds as an egg sub in baked goods. We buy them whole and grind them as needed (any overage of ground flaxseeds goes in the fridge to be used ASAP wherever we can).

Also, we've got very limited counter space and a man in the kitchen (hubby is the head chef at our house). So, we went to the hardward store and got a wire mesh rolling 3 shelf cart (like you might see in a repair shop) and that's where most of the kitchen appliances/tools live. The grain mill gets a corner of the coveted counter space. The toaster and blender take turns on the counter (right now, it's the toaster, in summer it was the blender because we were doing lots of cool fruit smoothies to beat the heat).

Hey Soldiersmommie,

Looks like you've gotten some good leads with the Cuisinart.

Last week at the McDougall Advanced Nutrition Study Weekend, the Celebrity Chef presenter was Colleen Patrick-Goudreau. She recommended Kitchenaid.

I too have had a bit of a challenge finding what I want after my old Hamilton Beach just broke too many parts. They do take up so much space and as mentioned can be a pain to clean, but boy do they make grated salads made! I picked up one a few months ago that was a bargain but it is so noisy I have to wrap the base in a towel to protect my ears. I'll check the brand and get back to you. Black and Decker? I think so and will let you know!

I second the recommendation for a stick or immersion blender for soups and more. Talk about a time-saver!

We've tried 3 different "boat motors" and all three couldn't cut it so we just use the blender (also a heavy duty bar-type blender, just two speeds Yell and YELL).
