Checochinican wrote: That follows an evening of outrageous eating, many bad things and too much of everything. Don't know why my appetite has gotten so out of control lately, but I suspect it has something to do with this long, dismal, cold, and usually dark winter. Some animals hibernate under these conditions. I just overeat. I totally understand that - with the way January was here in New England, I found myself daydreaming about grilled steaks and loaded baked potatoes. What actually helped was adding a little more really good dark chocolate and lots of clementine oranges. Go figure Chocolate is a known mood enhancer, affecting brain chemicals in a positive, relaxing manner. At the same time, you want to avoid a lot of processing, added fats, dairy, sugar. Dark chocolate works - it's got less added sugar to start with, it's still got lots of the original nutrients, and a little goes a long way as far as satisfaction. I read the packages and things like the Ghirardelli 86% dark squares don't have any added milk powder - they're VEGAN! (with the caveat that the small amount of sugar in it may have been processed with bone char - if it keeps me away from the steak and potatoes, I'll bend on that one). And, the bright color, scent and taste of citrus is an energy enhancer. If eating oranges doesn't work, look for a citrus scented air freshener (there are some nice ones in the grocery store that are basically citrus oil in an atomizer). And, as you probably already know, be sure to get some morning light on your face - even if it's gray and cloudy, get ye unto a window. That's one biggie that I'm thankful for - my employer mandates that every employee have fairly direct access to natural light - even those of us in cubicles at best have a window in our cube, at least, have to swivel the chair 90 degrees to see out a window. And, too, pay attention to what it is you are diving into - starches? sweets? salty (chips and such)? and let that be a guide as to what types of foods to load up on. I'm finding that I'm better able to handle this really LONG winter if I have a simple tossed salad (assorted greens and cherry tomatoes) with a splash of balsamic vinegar every day (alongside whatever else I might have). I'm not sure exactly of all the ins and outs but it's working so I'm continuing with it. And, just in case you need it, here's a kick to get you going with whatever exercise plan you need to get back into. Exercise, too, is a mood elevator and generally promotes feelings of well-being. I know that, for me, if I get myself moving after dinner to get on the treadmill or even spend 15 minutes with the weights, I'm less likely to go wild with snacks the rest of the evening. --Deb R

106 this morning. The thing that really encourages me is that my glucose level falls during the day. Yesterday, it went from 113 in the morning to 70 in the late afternoon. I'm not on meds, so I can't credit those.

Finally! My fasting blood glucose score is under 100 today. 98, but at least that's the right direction.

Great news! What are you doing differently that you think made it lower?

Whatever I was doing, I quit doing it, and my scores are back in the prediabetes range. Oddly, my two-hour postprandial scores are great. So, my meals are fine but my later snacks are not. Deb, everything you wrote is spot-on. Thanks!

98 this morning. My late afternoon scores are nearly always lower than the morning ones. Yesterday was radical. 101 at 11 a.m. and 71 at 5 p.m.

I skipped a couple days because my scores were disgusting. So was my eating. Better today - morning score was 98.

Cechochinican, you need to be our proof this works! You've been posting your scores for a while. What's your overall thoughts? Does what your eating have a bearing on your numbers?

It does work! What I'm eating has everything to do with my scores. I take no meds, don't exercise in any regular way. I started keeping a record on the day that I started the vegan diet - November 20, 2010. Some were over into the diabetes range, most were in the prediabetes range. I fell into the normal range on the 15th day. I started messing around with my diet in an effort to stop the weight loss, and my glucose scores edged back up. I want to get back on track. Today's fasting blood glucose - 97.

I am so happy to hear this! I started this when I heard Dr. Barnard talk (on PBS last year) about reversing diabetes. I had gestational diabetes for my 2 pregnancies and they found out I have Polycystic ovarian disease which they treat with glucophage. My A1c has creeped up, but it's been under the number it needs to be, but the glucophage keeps it down. I know if I eat wrong it will only get worse. This way of eating has made me feel a lot better, but I'm glad to hear it works too! Thank you.

I had gestational diabetes as well when I was pregnant...6 weeks after giving birth's check up (75ml glucose test) is normal... but, I watch out what I eat since...and test my blood sugar once in a while...I am trying to go vegan...right now, it is 80% (no diary, but, fish, or meat once or twice every 2 weeks)... I am still nursing, so, I eat a lot....

Wen, You mentioned your nursing, so that might change things for you, but let me tell you ---- there's a huge difference when you stop eating the meat, fish and chicken totally. I got my parents (who are healthy, thin and exercise vigorously) to stop the chicken and fish and they feel so much better, have a lot more energy. My already trim Dad (age 75) lost 4 pounds and said for the first time cross country skiing he didn't have to stop to ski up the "the hill" and he did it four time! Give it a try!

Yes...totally agree...that is my goal to go 100% vegan this year... I also wanna cut out my addition to nuts and chips (sweet potatoes chips)...I eat lots nuts...not sure if I am nursing... I know, I know, chips are bad for me...sometimes, I feel that I am "emotional eating"...I will start eating chips non-stop when I feel tired (long day with fussy baby, and hubby is working late, etc.)... I need to be in control on this...

My scores are so bad I won't even post them. I could be the Poster Child for what happens when we abandon our sensible diet and eat crap. Starting over......

I've gotten back on the program. This morning's blood sugar score was 103. Not great, but much improved.
