What about testosterone?
Posted Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 2:08 PM

As a man, is this something going vegan that I need to worry about?

Hey Madcat,
Not sure what you're referring to. Testosterone is rarely affected by diet. Any fluctuations are usually caused by hormonal syndromes or conditions such as hypogonadism, steroid use, or endocrine disorders. Veganism would not affect your testosterone levels, that I know of. Has someone told you otherwise?

I found this discussion on line about it but thought I would ask the experts.

Oh, perhaps Susan will give an opinion. In all of my reading, I've never seen it mentioned. Internet discussion forums (even this one!) can be rife with misinformation, rumor and ill-informed people passing themselves off as experts, when they are nothing of the sort. I've read a lot of books, but I'm no expert.

Hopefully someone with some letters after their name can lay your worries to rest.

You could always ask your doctor about it, also.

I appreciate your input. I think there are a lot of people with good info even without letters behind their names and you fit that bill. Wink

Aw, that's really nice of you to say. Thank you – that made my day. I often feel like a "fake" because I have a lot of knowledge, but none of those letters to back up what I'm saying. Thank you for such a nice compliment. Very Happy

Why are you guys arguing like this. We're all on the same side aren't we ??

Theodore,
You simply must stop posting your anarchistic thoughts to this forum! You're tipping the boat. Wink

Sorry, Molly. I posted without actually reading the messages in the thread.

I've seen so many arguments on internet forums that sometimes, if I want to stay in touch with a particular forum but I haven't got time to read the messages, I just post my standard "peacemaker" message and hope that it fits in. Ninety nine per cent of the time it does, but I guess I got caught out this time.

Apologies once again, and keep up the good vibes.

Oh wow, *lol*

I was totally kidding! I thought you were, too! See, your smart sense of humor got you into? Wink

No harm, no foul, I think, in this case. Smile

No, I haven't joined, but not for being unwilling. I haven't read McDougall's books, so I'd feel weird joining the forum. I know several people on here are members there, though. I think that Lani Muelrath is one of their Admin/Moderator-types, as well.

I agree with you on the "we're all on the same side, why can't we all just get along?" viewpoint? Infighting and nitpicking does nothing to advance the vegan message/cause, and serves only to destroy us in the end.

You're a fine gentleman, Theodore. Thank you for the compliments. This thread, supposedly full of testosterone, has turned out to be quite the ego-boost for me! I struggle a lot with self-esteem issues (though I'm in counseling currently), so I really appreciate your and Madcat's kindness. It is not falling on deaf ears. Smile

I'm a member at McDougal though I don't post often. Wild4Stars there also.

I've always felt that life is a bit too short for controversy. We're all here because we want to achieve great health on a sustainable diet. Why should there be controversy?

That said, there are some people that just can't seem to "get it" without an argument of some sort. And some of those arguments tend to amuse me, so I say, let them at it !! I may even participate if it continues to be amusing!!

Must say I totally enjoy 99% of the people on the PCRM 21-Day Kickstart Forums. I have found most of the threads to be fun and informative.

Hey Molly (and everyone else)

Have you seen this video:

http://vimeo.com/17033908[url]

It's a seriously great video about Dr McDougall, and it starts off with the founder of VegSource talking about how his wife was saved from autoimmune disease by reading Dr McDougall's book.

Check it out.

I'm one of those people, to some extent. If someone says something "authoritatively", I'll question it (I try to start out politely, assuming that I'm misunderstanding something). Sometimes it clears right up. Other times, they're stating as fact something that might be fine for them but (a) has little or no solid basis of data and/or (b) might not work for other people. For example, the whole "soy is perfect"/"soy is of the devil" debate. For some, soy IS wonderful. For others, soy IS a health hazard. And there are lots of caveats in between - are we talking fermented soy like tempeh or are we talking edamame or are we talking soy protein isolates? KWIM? So, I'll argue the issue (as politely as possible) until we've dotted i's and crossed t's to make some sense of the whole discussion (whatever it may be) and draw out as rounded a picture as we can of the subject.

And sometimes I need to "argue" a point as a "Devil's advocate" to clear up the subject in my own head by drawing out those who can more clearly state the point.

I love a good debate. Sometimes hearing both sides of an argument is the best way to make my own decision on a subject. What is irritating on some of these forums is people who want to put others down for their thoughts or ideas. I don't have patience with people like that. I was on a forum about Osteoporosis and there was one person that was calling another a liar, calling her names, telling her to shut up and get off the boards - all over which style of weight vest was best. It was pretty unbelievable. The moderators eventually shut the thread down and I haven't seen that person on any other threads, I think they may have taken her off. It was vile for a couple days. Even though the other person never responded to the rant, the ranter just kept on and on! Personally I think she needed to be on a mental health forum!

Here at PCRM, everyone seems to be on the same page with similar goals and issues. I have learned A LOT from people on these kick start forums.

You're welcome Madcat.

I'm just sorry that I wasn't able to offer any, shall we say, scientific advice.

Thanks for the video link, too! I really enjoyed it and it opened my eyes quite a bit. Shocked

Not sure how I can apply it to my own diet, as I am being watched for insulin resistance, which means I have to limit starch. Sad But I will try!
