Just to keep people chatting

We just picked up a copy of Veganomicon (we had a 33% off coupon!) Hubby loves the writing style (he's an Evil Dead and Bruce Campbell fan LOL).

Since we can't try everything all at once, what are some of your favorite recipes from this book?

I don't have this book, but have heard about it. Also for the gluten free people, there is a website called vegiac.com it has recipes and help for gluten free items.

I am awaiting to see what all everyone likes and how the recipes turn out!

Someone just mentioned this book last night at dinner. She said she made the lasagna for a wedding party, and it was a huge hit. She also mentioned that if you made it for yourself or your family, you could eat like a king for days.

Veganomicon is not totally gluten free but they have some gluten free recipes and tips on making some recipes gluten free even if that's not how they are originally written. I was happy to see that because, while we're not gluten free, we've got GF friends and we're always looking for good veg recipes that we can share. There are some folks at our monthly church potlucks that specifically look for our dishes because they know that we tend to make vegetarian/vegan recipes that are gluten and soy free (most of the time).

Before I moved, I had a "following" at church potlucks as well! hahaha I haven't connected with one since my move! Sad

We'll have to check out the lasagna! Hubby is 'famous' for his lasagna - vegetarian in the past (spinach, mushrooms, lots o' cheese, homemade whole wheat noodles, homemade pesto from our garden herbs). We tried the recipe for almond-based ricotta that someone here pointed me toward (used it in broccoli and mushroom calzones) and that was good. If the Veganomicon recipe is non-soy, we'll probably give that go as well and then he'll play games with the recipes until they suit him. Gotta love a man that can cook!

I would, but I haven't met one!

I've got one and you can't have him! Razz

He can cook, do housework, take care of yardwork, stays home with our now 12 yr old, gives one heck of a foot massage!

With all that, I don't mind at all heading off to work every morning.

Deb,

Now underneath that blatant bragging, I know there is a soft-hearted, compassionate woman who has empathy for another soft-hearted,compassionate woman with a broken man picker. Laughing

So hang on to your sweetie with BOTH hands and love him extra for those of us that don't have one to love on!

I do have empathy Wink and I intend to hold on tight - 17 years and counting. When we were first married I'd get him in 'trouble' with the other guys by telling their wives about our Saturday morning routine: if we had no pressing business on a Saturday, he'd get up as usual and let me sleep in. When he heard me start moving, he'd run a nice hot bubble bath for me to soak as long as I wanted to. When the shower started (me rinsing the bubbles off and washing my hair), he'd head to the kitchen and whip up a batch of crepes - filled with whatever we had on hand...fresh berries, chocolate, etc. and he'd meet me in the bedroom with breakfast in bed. Yeah, he's definitely a keeper!

Wow! Good for you!! It makes me SO happy to hear things like this.

For myself, I am a several time loser in marriage and relationships. So I am done. I manage to pick dysfunctional ones or at least the ones that bring out the dysfunctional in me!

I do love hearing stories about the ones that figure it out. It is like a fairytale in real life and it gives me a sense of all is right in the world!!

I have learned to enjoy the quiet with a good book, a dog on each side...peaceful.

I think one biggie was that we both waited until we were 'older than the average bears' - he was 25, I was 33, when we got married. We both had a bit of living under our belts but at the same time didn't have a lot of scar tissue from previous relationships. And, we did our premarital counselling (serious relationship counselling, not 'plan the wedding' counselling) before we even got engaged. No point getting halfway through the planning and find out it wasn't a viable relationship.

I knew that I was waiting for a guy that would treat me the way my dad treated my mom - utmost respect and willing to lay down his own life for her. And it wasn't just me - my sister also waited for that kind of guy (she got married 7 months after I did - boy were my folks busy! lol) Guess we just had really good role models to work with.

Oh, and for the record, my parents just celebrated their 51st anniversary back in mid September!

I married 3 weeks out of high school. I can see now it was just an escape from something bad to something slightly better. I did end up with 2 WONDERFUL children and am so grateful for that.

I will be the first to admit that I do not have the role models you and your sister did. So very nice.

I do realize though, that unpleasant or pleasant pasts, are just that. They are the past. I remind myself daily that the choices I make today are my future. If I don't like what I had in the past... choose again, and more wisely. My past left a mark, but I don't have to let it ruin who I am today. I choose to be kind as I possibly can to all around me. If I can't get it right for my own life, I pray I do no harm to the lives around me!

Please hug your parents, Super-Duper-Wonderful-Husband (SDWH), sister and hers, and yourself and tell them that someone unknown is praying that the rest of their life just keeps getting better!

Thanks - I will.

And, that's a really good point - the past affects our present but we choose this moment what we will do. We aren't slaves to past choices. Nor can we know with certainty what the future holds. All we can do is choose this step, in this moment, and move forward as best we can. When we know better, we'll do better.

All her books are fun! Veganomicon is one of my faves, though I am not sure which recipes I have liked the best, because so far they have all been great.

If you like that book also check out Vegan with a Vengeance. Great fun recipes and the awesome writing style.

Right now my favorite cookbooks are:
Vegan Soul Kitchen - by Bryant Terry
The Voluptuous Vegan - Robin Robertson
Vegan Planet - Myra Kornfeld

I'm not much of a cook, so prepping for the Veganomicon recipes (esp. the 1st time I try one) takes me forever! When I have had time on my hands, though, I've made the veggie cutlets, a few of the sauces, and the cholent. All were fabulous. I really loved the flavors in the cholent, and it's not nearly as bothersome & time-consuming as some other vegetarian cholent recipes I've come across.

I wanted to do the Julie & Julia thing with the Veganomicon but I still haven't started it yet.

Thanks Tina

Hubby usually does a recipe once the way it's written and then figures out how to make it easier and tweak it to suit us if needed. It should be fun getting all these new ideas and new ingredients to play with.

I get a lot of recipes at fatfreevegan.com
Awesome variety of recipes and a great blog to read.

I haven't gotten it yet, but my next purchase is going to be The Engine 2 Diet. I've heard it has some great recipes.

One of my favorites, that I use a LOT is "Yellow Rose Recipes" by Joanna Vaught. It has a lot of basic sauces, cheeses, gravies, soups. Good basic recipes that can be adapted to various tastes.

Another I bought right here at PCRM "The Simple Little Vegan Slow Cooker" by Michelle Rivera. It's another one that has some good basic recipes that you can alter to suit your tastes.

Another book on my wish list I've heard a lot of good things about - "How It All Vegan." Suppose to have lots of hints, tips, history, etc. in addition to some good recipes.

Tons of information out there!
