Pressure cooker recommendations?
Posted Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 1:16 AM

Hi all,
I'm interested in buying a pressure cooker. Do any of you own one that you're happy with? Can you recommend a brand or model? I've never used one before, but I want to get a good one. I'm willing to invest a reasonable amount of money to get something that will last a long time.

Thanks!!!

I've had mine about 20 years. It's a Presto, no frills, nothing fancy pressure cooker. The only thing I would suggest is to NOT buy one that is aluminum, make sure it's stainless steel. If I were in the market for one today I would probably just research on line, maybe see if Consumer Reports has tested and rated them.

I just went to Amazon.com, searched on "pressure cookers stainless steel" they have a ton of them and all have customer reviews. That might help.

What is the advantage of using a pressure cooker? Is it just the speed with which food cooks?

I remember my mum using one when I was a kid, but that was to cook stew meat from a cow that likely walked all the way from Alberta...tough as shoe leather. I remember one time something happened and the lid blew off and there was sauce of some sort on the ceiling. I have been scared of those things ever since. I still have that old pot (Mum's been gone 6 years now) but I only keep it because I'm a sentimental old thing. Smile

Thank you, Wild4Stars!

The advantage is (for me) being able to cook beans in 10 minutes versus soaking overnight and cooking for 2 hours. They're a HUGE time saver. You can also cook grains and soups, stews, all kinds of things. I'm mostly just excited about the beans, though. Very Happy

The new ones have safety valves that would keep the lid from flying off and throwing sauce all over!

Grains and beans cook very quickly.

I have been thinking about getting a pressure cooker for the beans and grains as well but have been intimidated as well. Do they really cook completely w/o the soaking, even Chickpeas???

I have never cooked beans without soaking. Even with soaking, beans take a long time to cook. My favorite way to cook beans are to soak over night and cook in the crock pot. 2nd favorite is to soak all day and cook in the pressure cooker. I cook brown rice in a stainless steel bowl in the pressure cooker and it comes out perfect every time. I cook it a bit longer than the recipe says because I like my rice a bit less firm. The instructions came with my pressure cooker and it has never failed. I really could use my pressure cooker more.

I cook beans in the crock pot by just soaking them overnight, drain and rinse, put them in the crock pot with veggie broth, onions, whatever spices I want and let it cook all day. About 1-2 hours before I'm ready to serve I like to add stewed or crushed tomatoes. Sometimes about 3 hours before ready to serve I will add either brown rice or barley. Truly my crock pot is my most used kitchen appliance.

Mine was but was thrown a little since I made a few "lifestyle changes". I'd love to gear that back up toward the fall, it'll be too hot to be cooking inside the house at all soon. Summer is on the way!

I'll try them in the crock this week...
