Ready-Made Seitan
Posted Friday, January 21, 2011 at 10:24 AM

Hi all,
I've never tried seitan in my life, even though I've heard of it and have been an on and off vegan for a few years now. I'm currently residing in Israel right now where they have a wonderful whole foods market and, on the whole, have products that contain a lot less sodium and sugar than most American products. I was browsing the soy section and came upon some packaged seitan which is, according to the package, BBQ flavored. BBQ in Israel is not like BBQ in the States - i.e., the sugar factor is much lower Smile. The ingredients seem minimally processed and there is no added oil or other fats. So I bought it.

I'm not quite sure what to do with it. The package says it's ready to eat, but I have this thing about eating soy products "naked" like that. Even with tofu, I can't just put some uncooked tofu into a salad - I have to cook it first Shocked. I'm thinking that I'll take a slice or two of the seitan, heat it up in the microwave, let it cool, and then chop it into cubes to add to my salad this evening. Since it's already flavored, it should hopefully had some nice flavor to the salad and also give a boost of protein.

We'll see how it goes...

Hi Djuna,
One of the cool things about Seitan is that it is NOT made from soy – it's wheat! Seitan is the gluten (protein) from wheat that's been separated out. It acts and feels a lot like meat in recipes, and has a great chewy texture. I love it! There are tons of recipes on the internet for various dishes, and homemade seitan is super-easy and cheap to make.

I went to the health food store to get some seitan, and I was disappointed that they didn't have any. I can't really remember if I ever had it, or not. Interesting that it's not soy...I had thought it was another soy product. By the way, one of my favorite bumper stickers of all time was one I saw on the back of a truck parked in the volunteer lot at the local animal sanctuary. It read, "I worship seitan." I thought it was pretty funny. Laughing

Besides being wheat, seitan is already cooked. It has to be to exist premade from the store. Uncooked it looks like little lumps of unappetizing dough left over from a mad baking party.

I make Setian at home all the time. I do NOT make soy products like tofu or soy milk at home. Why is simple. I firmly believe the best recipe for soy is dirty all the pots in the house then go out and buy some.

Quick before the Kickstart is over...How does one make seitan at home? Thanks.

I use the recipe from Veganomicon. Here is a link to the recipe on their website (theppk.com) http://www.theppk.com/2009/11/homemade-seitan/. I make it often. My 5-year-old absolutely loves it - she eats is plain.

Here is another seitan recipe site. I love this recipe because it satisfies my sausage cravings.
