Is everyone staying Vegan?
Posted Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 8:53 PM
I am happy to say that other than having a couple pieces of a delicious chocolate bar receipe my neighbor made for me, I am still eating vegan. Honestly, it has not been a huge struggle for me. I am especially happy with learning how to cook delicious vegan meals. Although I have been a Vegetarian Times subscriber for years without even being vegetarian, I have never been inspired as I have with the 21 Day program. I am interested to see how others have sustained. My husband has lost 20#s! And although he did the 21 day program, he has converted to a 20% fish/chicken and an 80% vegan diet. I find this to be contradictory but I am happy that he is resolved to eatting healthier. How's it going with you guys?

Still vegan almost all the time. About once every two weeks or so I want something non-vegan and I go ahead and eat it, but it really doesn't happen much. It's gotten to be pretty much a habit now.

At this point I plan to be Vegan for life, and I'm clear that there may be times that it's easier said than done. I have adopted this intention: "I AM a vegan as far as possible and practical. I avoid all animal foods to the best of my ability. When I have complete control, no animal food passes my lips. However, my path is one of progress, not perfection." I know that isn't as strict and militant as some, but it's what I can live with. I don't want to show up in the world as the "food police." I don't want to live that way. I've been vegetarian since 2000, but it has still been a difficult transition to Vegan.

Yeah, I refuse to be doctrinaire about it. The cool thing about being vegan this time around is it feels like MY CHOICE, not something I can't wait to "cheat" on, or something I'll be a bad person if I go back on. It's just something I'm doing because it feels right for me, and there's no one to disappoint, and no rules to follow. I just choose to eat vegan. Every meal is a new chance to choose that, and so far, so good.

Thanks. I appreciate that. I love your words of wisdom. I pretty much feel the same way. There have already been a few siutaions such as eating out that are hard to handle. I figure I will just do the best I can. I've been telling my husband for years that we should come up with a fast food vegetarian/vegan restaurant. If you've noticed a lot of the fast food places are coming out with vege burgers and the likes. Every time I hear of something new I give him "The look." Im from San Francisco where drive throughs are far and few in between but you would think that in the land of "Free love" someone would come up with that!

Eating out is harder for me if I'm super-hungry. Otherwise, I can pretty much find vegan food anywhere. (I know that part of that is that I live where I do, and it's harder for people in the Midwest, or the South.) Bluesgyrl wrote: I figure I will just do the best I can. I'm your neighbor (I'm in the East Bay) and yeah, that would be a great idea. In San Diego, there was a drive-through place called Faque Burger (pronounced Fake Burger) that was good; they didn't survive, but it was around 20 years ago, and maybe they'd do better now.

I'm doing my best but have been sick for the past few days and the only thing in the cupboard I could tolerate the thought of eating was chicken noodle soup - and thank goodness I had it because I have not been in any condition to go out to the store. Must remember to stock up on lentil soups etc. for these types of times. I usually make my own but have just been prone on the couch for three days. Blech! Will get back on track a.s.a.p.

I'm loving this "diet." And I agree totally with SereneVannoy and Wild4Stars. After 20 years of living with the totally pickiest eater and his family and feeling like a short order cook whenever they were here for a weekend (mostly eating out as it was just to hard on me seeing them eat only junk)I can't do that to other people when we visit them. I do (discretely, I hope) choose the non-meat items and eat lots of those. Luckily I've never yet had to starve!! But when ever I am in control of my plate I'm sticking to all-vegan. I'm feeling healthier and somehow happier too.

Yep, staying vegan--definitely sticking with this for life! Like you guys though, I had some less than 100% days in the beginning. No big deal. Eventually I just stopped missing things and learned how to navigate through going out till it was all routine. BUT I've been a little off-track the past several days: restaurant dinner, dinner party, and Super Bowl party! Everything I ate was vegan, but it sure wasn't low fat or even moderately healthy. And then there were the drinks. After a few days of this I'm feeling a little rough, and I missed the gym twice thanks to the giant snowstorm. So, I'm happy and thankful to see you guys here today as I recommit! I had a good breakfast and packed my lunch, and after a healthy dinner and good night's sleep I bet I'll feel better by tomorrow. Have a great week!

Shanna ~ I can relate, I over ate yesterday, plus had some wine. Stayed vegan, but ate too much, and of course wine is lots of empty calories. But back on track today and determined to be "THIN AGAIN IN 2010"

I am not a big football fan. Unless the 49ers are in the Superbowl.........I don't bother. I am glad, however, that New Orelans were able to have victory. So much heartache.........they deserved it. What is it with the Superbowl anyway? Why has it become this fest to stuff yourself? It's like a glutten holiday! Although........I am interested if anyone walked away with any new, interesting vegan delights!???? Serene.............I knew you were in Bay Area which is why I suggested cooking classes. In your spare time................of course. Ha! Maybe someday. You are full of great ideas. I think Im going to do a little more research on this whole fast food thing. Very interesting about the place in San Diego. Why do you think it closed?

I have been staying vegan mostly, but cheat about once a week or so. I'm not mad at myself about it, I just go back to usual. I had a very hard time in Las Vegas, I could only eat hummus!

I cheated a little bit. I went to a cafeteria that put butter in most of their vegetables, I've eaten some of my son's lacto-leftovers, and I had a Shipley's donut yesterday. Aside from that I've been doing really well at this.

You guys seem to be doing good, even with a few slips. During our primary I worked as an election judge, we had to stay in the building for 15 hrs and couldn't leave. Well I ate 2 danish rolls, 1 slice of lemon poppy bread and a cup cake. How disguesting! I brought a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich and an orange, which I eat also. Ordered steamed vegetables and spring vegetable rolls from Panda Express. The next day I really felt bad. Sick to my stomach. That's the last time I eat all those sweets.

Sweets have always made me feel sick, even when I was younger. I never really developed a strong sweet tooth. Salty, crunchy is more my downfall. A bag of chips and a jar of salsa and I'm a goner !!

I do better at home, then I do going out to eat. I have to get used to special ordering. BLT without bacon and extra tomates and lettuce. I did get some vegetable soup and pour my baked beans in it. It tasted good, but not sure it was vegan.

I've learned to always carry my own salad dressing with me. Worse case scenario I can get a salad and a baked potato. Also I almost always have a Larabar with me. Vegan and very filling.

I think Im going to do a little more research on this whole fast food thing. Very interesting about the place in San Diego. Why do you think it closed? My personal theory is because instead of sodas (which are easy to find in vegan versions) they served this nasty "Jungle Punch" stuff that was like fruit juice with too much lemon in it. When I get fast food, I want a soda with it. I mean, I almost never eat fast food, but when I do, if I get a drink, it's gonna be a soda, not a cleansing glass of lemon juice. The burgers and air-cooked fries were good, though!
