Embarrassing digestive problems
Posted Friday, January 21, 2011 at 2:17 PM
Hello, I have embarrassing digestive problems in the form of excessive gas/flatulence. I have been following a vegan diet for over a month, and have not eaten meat, eggs, or products containing them for over 20 years. I exercise for at least 20 minutes almost every day. Why do I still have this problem?

My thoughts are that it will take a bit for your tummy to get used to all the fiber. It is grateful, just doesn't know how to process it quite yet, once it does you will feel MUCH better!

Hi MendoMama, I don't have much to offer about answering your question, but I too am in Mendo (on the coast). Small world, huh?

I really think it will calm down. I remember when I started eating a gluten-free cereal that was really high in fiber and added high fiber soy yogurt on top, my tummy gave me FITS! Now I eat the cereal without any reaction at all. It did take a month or 2 to be sure, but now no issues.

we had the same thing when we upped the amount of fiber (beans, lentils, dark greens like kale). It's mostly subsided now (we've been doing this since the Sept kickstart) but every now and again the green leafies will pop up again. One of the best ways I've found to deal with it is to make sure that there's plenty of water in my day and that I get a minimum of 30 minutes of walking in per day - getting moving physically gets the digestion going too. I sometimes get the 'walking toots' - flatus relieving itself as I walk - but since that's usually when I'm on the treadmill with no one else around, I don't mind. --Deb R

I seem to be the opposite and this problem has improved since changing my diet to vegan almost 3 weeks ago and getting rid of the junk food. I have known for some time that too much chocolate gives me excessive gas, as does too much wheat bread (not the gluetin free variety). Depending on which one I have eaten it feels like either the sugar is fermenting in my gut or the yeast is. With bread I also get a bloated feeling. I have swapped to some gluetin free products just because my supermarket has these available and many are also vegan. Perhaps this is why things have improved.

I don't think I read anywhere on the kickstart about the need to increase your fiber intake slowly, or else you will have the bloating, gas, etc. Your fiber will increase alot at once of course, as you eat more veggies, beans, etc, and stop eating meat. Just have to try to take it slow at first until your body adjusts.

I didn't eat a lot of meat (mostly chicken) or eggs when I went vegan cold turkey. Did notice an increase in gas, and think it took about 6 weeks before it settled down, and certainly less than before vegan. Been vegan 17 mos. now and noticed over time that I have developed a "gas routine", lol. Little when I first get up, and for some reason a little session usually between 1-3 p.m. One GOOD thing, though, veggie farts aren't stinky like meat farts! Sometimes just a bit more "squashy" after that consumption, tee hee! It does get better, honestly. Just remember, men and women pass gas on average 14 times a day, per Dr. Oz, just to mention one source. If we didn't, think how uncomfortable we'd be, not to mention really cranky!

Do you realise that if you guys were having this discussion in England you'd all be arrested.

What must they think of the book Everybody Poops? --Deb R PS Even hubby has commented that though we do tend to be a bit gaseous here and there, it's nowhere near as toxic as it used to be. We don't "eek noxious fumes" (to quote Donkey from Shrek) so much.
