Hi everyone that is still hanging around waiting to hit it in Sept.
I have been hit by the meat bug. Yes I left but now I'm back. I have been eating turkey, chicken and fish for a few months. Yes this is my confession. I have paid the dues though.
I got food poisoning and I think it was the chicken in the cob salad that I ate. I lost 7 lbs. in 5 days and I tell you it was not fun.
I will never go back to meat for fish again. I take a vow here and now. It is just not worth it. I needed to loose weight but this was not the way to do it.
I remember that I was feeling like I needed a meat fix and it was down the slope.
Here is to better health, nutrition and feeling better!
I can't wait for September. How about you? Surprised

I'm ready for September too. Haven't had any meat, but haven't been 100% diligent about checking ingredients when I eat out or at other's houses. 100% vegan at home, 98% every where else.
Need to get back to 100% every where, every day, every bite.

Good for you, Aleta, for being honest about your behavior. It helps all of us to see where we can "clean up" our own actions. I applaud you for standing up and taking the vow to remain meat-free.

If I'm ever tempted to go back to meat or dairy or eggs, I remind myself of some of the terrible cruelties suffered by the poor animals at the hands of men. They do not deserve to suffer, and we do not have the right to hold dominion over them. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend the movie "Earthlings." It will change your world-view. This film is available on Netflix, and might even be available through your local Blockbuster or library.

Here is a page with some great links to learn more about factory farms, slaughterhouses, and the absolute cruelty with which we treat our fellow animals. We humans seem to forget that we are animals, too.

Over the past few months I have tasted meat or fish a few times and it hasn't really bothered me physically, but I am happy to say that I haven't had any real cravings for it either. In fact, most of the time it actually looks pretty disgusting to me. The thing that has caused me problems is dairy - a few times I ate a veggie pizza with cheese on it or other similar things where I ordered vegetarian and failed to say "no cheese" and then spent the rest of the day running to the bathroom! Needless to say, I am much more careful now!

It's interesting that now there are recalls out on eggs and meats. Yesterday at the end of the newscast about the recalls the announcer said "Vegan anyone?" YES!

It's amazing too how after years of cooking meats, I am now grossed out by them. My H and I tried to cook a turkey for the relatives last Thanksgiving; we were like a couple of bumbling fools! This year they can cook their own darn turkey.

Don't make a New Year's Resolution...make a Decision!

thanks everyone. I needed all your support and kick in the butt. Smile I get to try some raw veggies today as my food poisoning has run it's course. Just a few and I know I will feel much better.
Thanks again. Very Happy

I guess it's the cravings that get to me. The cheese is the worst. And I know it is meant to do that. I mean the stuff that's in the cheese will get you to want more. And that those things are the worst for us. I have been doing yogurt to get my good bugs back in my stomach and that has helped. I'm not running to the bathroom anymore but still feel a bit off. I am so ready to get my gut and life back to the vegan. I know it is the best for us but it is hard to stick with it. I'm just hoping that I can get rid of the dairy too. I'm off meat again so no problems there. Oh and the eggs. I need to get rid of those too.
See you all soon.
I can't wait.
Thanks again for your support.

I know many people who were able to get rid of dairy after reading "The China Study." Did it for me, I even got my omnivore husband off of all dairy. It's not that you love cheese, it's addictive! MUST GO !!

I have figured out (too late of course) that prepared foods have had dairy in them and every time have paid dearly for it later.

I think it’s funny the way that most of us have had similar experiences w/dairy products.

Aleta-I'm so sorry that you got so sick but very glad to hear that you recovered and seemingly learned something from the experience. Nothing is lost as long as we move forward from it in a positive direction, right?

Hi fiji51904,
I can be slow to learn. I think I might be a bit hard headed. Confused
I see you are live in Ontario, CA. I live in Claremont...just a few miles from you. Small world.
Thanks for the words of encouragement!

@Aleta-that’s so cool! Were up at the CWP at least once a week. We use it as a training walk for the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

And I KWYM about the hard head though. I'm sporting one of those too!

We are up there every Sunday morning around 6 am. We have been starting at the bottom of Thompson Creek on Town (?) right above the 210. We'll walk up that path do the loop and then head back down so that we aren't on the hill in the heat (it's all downhill from the gazebo!). It's a really nice 10 mile walk total. However this week we will not be up there, a cpl of us are running(ROTFLMAF)the Disneyland ½ marathon. But we will be right back up there next weekend at the latest.

During the week we meet over on Foothill and Euclid and walk the Bridle Path from Foothill to 24th. That one is about 6 miles start to finish.

I'd love to have you join us some time! New blood and new stories are always great, LOL!

We've all done it! One of the helps for me was to take a class called Certificate in Plant Based Nutrition from eCornell with Dr. T. Colin Campbell. He has guest experts like Brendan Brazier (famous athlete), Drs. Caldwell Esselstyn (author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease), Dean Ornish, John McDougall, etc. and you will learn how dairy triggers the tumors' growths, when the body is first seeded with an aflatoxin from moldy grains and peanut butters (Arrowhead Mills was found to be without the aflatoxin), and you will be excited to go to www.notmilk.com which will completely cure you of any intellectual desire to eat dairy! The casomorphine in it is an addictive drug, but the mouth feel can be duplicated and there are books like The Uncheese Cookbook (Book Publishing Co., 1994 (Joanne Stepaniak). Onward and upward! Love and support to you from drflora3rd@netzero.net also at www.rawdoctors.com and www.RawLife.org our free 21 day Dr. Ann Wigmore raw/living food detox.

Aleta, it's all about learning! When I chose to become to vegan, I was hoping to be "perfect forever" as much as possible. I accepted a challenge to become simply vegetarian for 30 days on a social animal site, and I chose to go one step further to vegan after prompted to become educated about how those pretty packages of meat got to my market. I chose to watch Peta videos, allowing me to view the truth about where my meat, eggs, and dairy products came from, and the cruelty and torture involved in factory farming, not to mention the destruction to our environment. What an education! Vidoes were certainly not pretty or easy to watch, but they made me strong in my commitment! I mentioned in my journal about my salad dressing choice one night and a friend pointed out that it probably contained cheese and maybe anchovies. Was tired and forgot to check the label - yes, contained cheese and milk products. Felt so bad, but realized, OK I made a mistake. As long as you make the best informed choices you can, well, what more can you ask of yourself?! Don't beat yourself up, just move on. It's all about baby steps, learning, and striving to maintain your commitment. My hardest challenge was cheese. It was in every salad, in every sandwich, and on most every baked potato in my life. Six mos. after changing to vegan, and I'd long forgotten about the demon cheese, someone online mentioned Daiya brand cheese so I checked it out: http://www.daiyafoods.com. Never found it in a market here, but DID find: http://www.followyourheart.com. Click on Vegan Gourmet to see cheese varieties. I've only found the cheddar and mozzarella. I love the cheddar! Sure, the texture is different since it's tofu/soy based, but I find the flavor wonderful; even better heated. I refuse to become a cheese-aholic again, and only buy it when it's on sale. I consider it a treat, use it as such, and have never felt deprived. Check the labels of all Vegenaise offerings on this site and you'll see they offer nothing but fat and sodium. Review the cheese nutrional values, and you'll see that, while sodium is 1-2% higher, fat content is lower and you also get the benefit of some fiber, protein, calcium, and iron in one instance. Hummus has become my "mayo" for everything, and many different mfgr flavors are available. I LOVE the Meza brand's original flavor. Thank goodness I have a local Costco because a 30 oz. container is only 4.99, compared to an 8 oz. offering in the QFC for 3.89. Great source of B-12 is nutritional yeast, and it has a wonderful cheesy flavor. Great sprinkled on popcorn, veggies, salads, and in anything you might cook. Oh, Aleta, so much to share! E-mail me if you'd like. I cook for one, and NOT a kitchen person and stick to pretty much the same stuff, but I've discovered some wonderful things!
