Lignans

What are lignans? Are there any concerns with consuming them because of the phytoestorogens? I recently bought flax meal for a recipe and it talked about the benefits on the package. But I am always skeptical and concerned with estrogen and its effect on women. Someone I know puts a spoonful in her morning smoothie but I am a little hesitant!

There was a recent study on the subject. Here's a summary:

Dietary Lignans Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

Postmenopausal women whose diets include plenty of lignans, natural compounds found in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and flax and sesame seeds, may have a lower risk of breast cancer, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers found that postmenopausal women who consumed plenty of lignans reduced their risk of breast cancer by 14 percent. Lignans are similar in some ways to the isoflavones found in soy products, but are found in a variety of foods other than soy products. Researchers conducted a review of 21 prior studies to observe the connection between diet and breast cancer risk. The benefit from lignans may be due to their ability to block estrogen’s activity in the body or to other anticancer effects.

Just wish some of these studies would cover pre-menopausal and peri-menopausal women. Ever notice how most studies only talk about post-menopausal women?

Thank you Susan. So I guess it gets the green light but Bugsmom you bring up a good point. Is it a positive for pre-menopausal women ?

Guess that'll have to be for the experts to chime in on. Post-menopausal women have lower levels of estrogen etc (that's the nature of it after all) so consuming phytoestrogen containing products is likely going to affect things differently than women who are or may become pregnant or are nursing, and those whose systems are playing out that wacky "grand transition" from one stage to the other.

I suppose they don't do studies on pre-/peri menopausal women because we've already got enough variables going on, making controlled studies harder. Probably the same reason that they rarely study *anything* on pre-menopausal women (they're just now getting around to noticing that women have different heart attack symptoms, react to medications differently, etc).

I've only ever seen positive information about lignans. I've never seen any negative information about them.

What information have you come accross that's made you worried.
