What are YOUR reasons to go veg?
Posted Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 9:42 AM

I have several:
Health of the planet and animals
My own weight and health

We can look at the headlines about salmonella in eggs and rest easy, knowing we are unaffected ... and hoping that incidents such as that one lead others to re-think what they are eating and make some changes.

Don't make a New Year's Resolution...make a Decision!

Great article, even if totally disgusting.

I originally went vegetarian in 2002 simply because I thought it was healthier. Through the process I started reading and understanding that it was also better for the planet and of course a LOT better for animals. I went back and forth about transitioning to vegan several times, finally made it 100% on January 1, 2010.

Reading "The China Study" made me realize I would never eat dairy again. If I ever thought I would go back to eating eggs, I think the above article probably cemented a big NO on that one.

Susan
Great article. You really hit the nail on the head. Thanks for posting it here for us to see.

As to my reasons for going vegan: Having a husband with head and neck cancer and reading the three main causes of that type of cancer: smoking; drinking;and lack of fruits and vegetables in the diet. This is in a government publication and when even they make a statement like that it started research that led me to veganism.

My reasons for staying vegan have grown: love my slimmed down figure (as does my DH); Dropped cholesterol medicine; halved my BP med; lost my post-nasal drip and corresponding meds; and have all kinds of energy.

And my concern for the animals has grown exponentially now that I've looked into the conditions of their lives. I can't imagine eating one now.

To improve my health, energy levels, relieve depression, joint pain, and improve the health of my kids and husband. I read the China Study several years ago and grew up on a whole foods diet as a kid. Now that I'm forty-one and struggle with my weight and watch my twelve-year- old son struggle as well I'm plagued by 'mommy guilt' and sadness. So desperate to turn my live around and live as natural as possible. It amazes me how far OFF track I've gotten!

I have two autoimmune disorders, a nasty family history of heart disease and diabetes, and I want to live a long healthy life.. and feel better! Research I did on the endometriosis in particular led me to believe giving up meat and dairy was non-negotiable to reclaim my health. I'm still a "baby" vegan and have much to learn to do it correctly.

Also, "The China Study" was pretty darn convincing.

I am going vegan because I am an extremely soon-to-be 55-year-old sedentary, overweight, smoking, a little depressed, diabetic with high blood pressure, etc. I had gone vegan for 6 months a while back and dropped 30 pounds and felt wonderful. Some family crises happened and I went back to my old ways. I am now gearing up to go vegan for life. Actually, there is no reason whatsoever to ever stray then or in the future, just my lack of willingness to commit got in my way.

My stop smoking quit date is September 6, 2010, as well as committing to a plant-based eating way of life. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that extremely soon birth date is September 11th? Very Happy

Happy Health! Very Happy

I accepted a friend's challenge to "Meet My Meat", become aware of the cruelty and torture in factory farming, and see how those pretty packages get to my market. Challenge was to become vegetarian for 30 days. Saw more than I ever could have imagined, or wanted to, but realized that vegetarian was just not enough for me. Been vegan since 8-15-09! Just to give you all some background - and inspiration. Been an overweight, sedentary person for 20 yrs. Lost 30 lbs. in 3.5 mos! My annual's 4/10 blood test revealed HDL/LDL went from 73/161 to 92/64, and BP (on med) from 146/90 to 126/70 in just 8 mos. Sure, weight loss had good deal to do with that! My protein level only dropped .2 and is still well within levels. I've lost 50 lbs. to date, and just recently joined Anytime Fitness. Weigh seems to have stabilized for the last few months, so have to do something to lose those last 20-25. I'm looking forward to learning more from other vegans, and hoping to help the newbies! Good luck and happy, healthy eating to all! "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian. We feel better about ourselves and better about the animals, knowing we're not contributing to their pain" -Paul and Linda McCartney.

"But for the sake of some little mouthful of flesh we deprive a soul of the sun and light, and of that proportion of life and time it had been born into the world to enjoy." Plutarch.

I am mostly vegetarian with periods of vegan. I am doing the kick-start because I know to affect change with the support and encouragement of others REALLY WORKS.

I want to stay vegan mainly because of the unnecessary harm that is done to animals/planet. Unnecessary because we don't need to eat them. The cruelty that is perpetrated is unthinkable and I believe the more the public hears "vegan or vegetarian" the more it will absorb into the consciousness of our society. I loved reading everyone's posts - THANK YOU !!

My reasons are mainly for health reasons. I'm in my early 40s, a little bit overweight and for years I've struggled with extreme low energy levels. In the past I've made a few attempts to follow a vegan diet but really never committed myself to stick with it. Currently, my diet consists of about 80% vegetarian. I think now is as good a time as any to cut out the dairy, eggs, and small amount of meat that are currently in my diet. Very Happy

Boy, these days there are so many! When I started (oh my, 37 years ago?) it was health and humanitarian. Now? Add environmental, ethical, deeper health issues...somebody stop me!

I have not been able to go Veg yet, however I have been Vegetarian for over 3 years now. My reason: compassion for animals. Sickens me to even THINK about it. Yes it's healthier..blah blah blah, but to me, it's all about the animals. Very Happy

These are all great reasons. I went vegan for health reasons but I'm staying vegan for the animals.

I've been vegan for 4 years and at first my decision was based on health. Quickly thereafter I learned about how the animals were being treated and all the damage that's happening to the earth due to the choices we make.

I'm trying to help my husband along that's why I signed up. He's vegan at home and does eat vegetarian sometimes outside of the home. I'm hoping to add more low-fat recipes that I can send to work with him. I also would like to be of support to all those who are doing this because it's a great choice and you can do it!

The best decision I ever made in my life was to go vegetarian two years ago when I realized I didn't HAVE to eat meat anymore. I did it for the animals. Now I want to top myself and go vegan, again for the animals, but also my health as I barrel through my fifties. I want to feel like I'm making some contribution to the health of the planet at large. I can hardly wait for Monday! Very Happy

I have a chronic condition that requires all sorts of heavy duty drugs with all manner of side effects. I guess my username says it all, I'm trying to stay off the drugs as long as possible.

My reasons are the same as soon2B. Also, the older I get (40s) I realize that food really affects how much energy I have, and how my digestive tract functions. Vegan is good to me.

I love reading everyone's reasons, so many, like me, care about the quality of animal life and the quality of life for all on the planet. Your posts steeled my resolve. I am totally thrilled about this plan. I was ALMOST vegetarian but now I'm on board! Thank you all.

I want to get healthy! I need to lose at least 50 pounds. I have tried every diet and gained my weight back. I think I need to change the way and what I eat and the rest will fall in place. I hope this is not just another faze for me.

Along this journey of reading whatever I can get my hands on about veganism, I have become "aware" of the animals. Small things have been happening to me, or I've just become aware of things. Like the time a cow in a trailer looked at me as I was driving down the highway. Where was it going?? Or, when my husband accidently stepped on our dog's foot and she squealed. She felt pain. I have been watching birds right outside my kitchen window. They built a nest and I could see little heads pop up and cry for their parents to bring food.

I have also watched Meet your Meat. I had to make myself watch it to the end.

I hope to continue with this. I have never even tried to be vegetarian so I don't know how I will do. But, one day at a time.
