Preachy Veganism For Weightloss
Posted Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 2:13 PM

I find that I weigh less if I've just preached to someone about the morality of their food choices.

Has anyone else noticed this ??

Are you being playful?

I find quite the contrary and was thinking that earnestness may be bad for one's health Smile

I think maybe by "weigh less" is conscience? In that case, I only "weigh less" when my actions, thoughts and words are in harmony with each other and in line with a loving spirit.

I don't preach. I enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner sans turkey without preaching - and was thankful that there was no controversy over my choice.

Oceandog, your signature quote says it all.

Hi T -

Is that because the "preachee" knocked your block off? Smile

Psssst, Gyro - Theodore is always playful but don't tell him I told you. He prefers to be thought of as a serious philosopher. In truth, he's a seriously (playful) philosopher. Smile

OK, firstly, thanks to all of you for your thoughts on this.

Secondly, no-one listen to Mariberry. She's had it in for me ever since I admitted I have no idea who Justin Bieber is.

That said, her suggestion about the preachee knocking my block off isn't a bad one. It could well be that.

It's starting to dawn on me that the subject matter of my preaching probably doesn't have anything to do with the weightloss. After all, I know of quite a few vegans who spend a lot of their time preaching, and none of them have lost any weight.

I guess it could be because I have a very physical preaching style. Lots of vigourous arm movements. Jumping up and down etc.

Please excuse me while I take a couple of hours to reflect on this.

I am glad you have sorted things out Theodore! That is the first step in a peaceful direction.

For the Preachy People of any belief. My thought is they believe so strongly in their stance they forget about their own journey to this spot, and hence forget about the gentleness and compassion necessary. People also tend to strongly believe whatever they are believing in and, even if few want to view it that way, I think frequently it becomes a battle between right and wrong and therein is the problem. Whenever we try to make ourselves right and someone else wrong, communication stops. I think perhaps if there is no communication, perhaps learning stops as well.

This is a journey of learning and what was right for me 20 years ago is unacceptable (wrong) to me now. It needs to be about compassion and love. AND saying that, I believe if those were the goals, I beieve that the animals would not be killed, children not abused, people not murdered, etc as none of those are compassionate nor loving.

Hmmm perhaps I am getting a bit too close to the preach podium (a.k.a. soap box)? Smile Okay I will nudge myself off!!

Oh, beautifully put, Oceandog. You've really got a way with words and phrases.

Theocrates,

I honestly don't know what to think. A man with such an inquiring mind who has not yet researched the latest world phenon: Justin Bieber? What the...?! How is one ever to take you seriously? Gobsmacked is an understatement. I'm in shock.

Anyway, I suppose there can be subtle preaching, can't there? I mean, for example, a colleague is down in Washington State as we speak to do her Black Friday shopping and I asked her to get me 4 copies of "Forks over Knives" because I want to give them away for presents. I'm sure my co-worker will read the back of the film, and think, "hmmmm....maybe I should pick up a copy for myself". And before I know it , my one simple request has converted 5 people!! Easy peasy.

Gotta go now and see if subtle preaching is reflected on the scale.

Thanks Mariberry!

Since we're voting, I thought we could also consider "Theodophilus". Broken down it's "Theo" for Theodore (obvious), "phil" for philosopher, and "us" for...well, us who are in "o" of you, T. (or the "do" part could be for "doh!" because of some of the ideas you put forth, as in "Doh, why didn't I think of that!") Whatcha think? Also, "Theodophilus" has that "acidophilus" kinda ring to it which makes one think of a probiotic - which you are, T, in many ways. A probiotic for the mind, if you will. We know what probiotics do to the digestive tract: keep things moving along smoothly and aid in general wellbeing. And that's what you do for us, Theocrates/Theodophilus. You're just such a lovely friendly organism that aids in our general wellbeing (by making us smile...which of course we won't admit to because you're not the least bit funny, are you?! Nooooo!) Truly, we all need a daily dose of Theodophilus as we ponder: to preach or not to preach; that is the question.

Theosaurus-rex:

I certainly did not mean to make you cry buckets of tears. At first I thought I'd hurt your feelings and was about to suggest I should be spanked and sent straight to your room. Thankfully I realized in the nick of time that they were joyful tears so all is well. I do see your point regarding myriad forms and government red tape to change your name legally. What a bradpity. Sad Still, weight loss is the silver lining from all that weeping, eh (Canadian accent here).

How about we simply call you good ol' Theodore and then we can get on with preaching for weight loss as per.

Bish bash bosh, it's time to nosh. Oh gosh, that squash looks rather posh! It must have cost a lot of dosh. Let's wash our hands, splish splash splosh! Good niiiight

Love y'all (American accent).

OK, so I seem to have lost a couple of pounds whilst reading this. Possibly because it made me wet myself.

We usually bring along something that can serve as a side dish and a main when we're at something like the family Thanksgiving meal (where we know there will be lots of meat, fat, starch and a dearth of vegetable). Last year, we did mac'n'not-cheese with broccoli mixed in. This year, we did spaghetti sauce with a pumpkin curry sauce. We usually end up bringing most of it home with us because no one else is willing to venture beyond meat'n'taters. Their loss. I just filled up my plate with the squash and a bit of sweet potato and a biscuit (to make it look full). If the plate looks full, no one asks any questions.

We're considering lasagna for Christmas - one made with homemade whole wheat noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, spinach, mushrooms and homemade tomato herb sauce and one that is eggplant slices in lieu of pasta with an almond milk faux ricotta, veggies, and sauce. We've done eggplant rollatini that way for ourselves and it's yummy!

Christmas dinner at your house sounds delicious! My husband expects turkey for all holidays including his birthday. Like you, I fill up my plate with potatoes, veggies, bread dressing and whatever "faux turkey" I choose. I still cook all the family favorites because my son and I are the only vegans. If I was having dinner at someone else's home, I'd do as you did and you're right, their loss if they don't try the dish.

Unfortunately, I can't load up on the mashed potatoes, bread dressing, etc because that would way overload my glucose level. The squash was so low glycemically that I could have a bit of sweet potato and a biscuit but that was about it. I think we might try a mashed cauliflower one time. For my omni son I made mashed cauliflower with diced ham and shredded cheddar one day and he really liked it.

We also recently made a scalloped potato dish that used chickpeas and smoky chipotle powder to give it a texture and flavor similar to the ham that's usually in scalloped potatoes. Then we used a nice not-cheese over the whole thing. Even non-veg folks ate it up! No recipe really, we just winged it.
