The FDA's Qualified Health Claim for Olive Oil: "Limited and not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that eating about 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to the monounsaturated fat in olive oil. To achieve this possible benefit, olive oil is to replace a similar amount of saturated fat and not increase the total number of calories you eat in a day." Paraphrasing in my words: "Drinking a bit of olive oil is likely to be less harmful to your health than eating a half stick of butter." Note: I can think of a whole bunch of foods that are less harmful to your health than a half stick of butter. If you are into the seemingly popular game of "eat this; not that" then you should "drink olive oil; not eat butter". But pouring a generous amount of olive oil on a salad because olive oil is "heart healthy" is silly.
