brewer's yeast

does anyone know if brewer's yeast is basically the same thing as nutritional yeast?

i have a canister of brewer's yeast i bought for something awhile ago and i just remembered it because it has almost the exact same packaging as some nutritional yeast we used in a vegan cooking class i took last week.

is it pretty much the same thing?

Unfortunately, these are [u]not[u] the same thing. Brewers yeast is for making beer, and is not edible. Nutritional yeast, however, tastes delicious! Smile

Hi,
Brewer's yeast has a different taste from nutritional yeast and shouldn't be used in place of it.
I do occasionally use brewer's yeast in stews and soups.
But I love nutritional yeast - I eat a lot of that.

No - it tastes completely different. Also, many people use nutritional yeast because it is often supplemented with B12. You would have to check and see if the brewer's yeast is supplemented.

i have found nutrional yeast FLAKES and nurtional yeast POWDER... when a recipe calls for nutrional yeast... i assume they mean the flakes, since they are more common? right?

can't wait for the next kickstart! I am doing great.. losing about a lb a week and eating everything i want. Food is great... husband just informed me we need a new grill this summer... the one we have has "had too much meat cooked on it." i think he just wants a new grill. i just say "yes dear."

btw.. our first date..he had to say yes dear 3x in a row or no 2nd date for him! lol

thanks
cynthia

I know nothing about nutritional yeast but I have seen it mentioned here and people seem to really like it. I recently looked at nutritional yeast at whole foods and there were a few different brands. Some had added vitamins, etc.... I think they were all the powder form. For those of you that use it can you advise which one you would recomend and how you use it ? Do you need to be careful not to have too much in one day ? Thanks !

I recommend Red Star brand. It has a reliable source of B12. Usually, this is the brand in Whole Foods' bulk section as well. Watch out for brands that add dairy products such as milk-derived proteins.

Thanks Susan! And how do you use it ? Just sprinkle on anything you want ? ( popcorn, vegetables, pasta ?)

I never tried nutritional yeast before January's kickstart, but I love it! I use it anywhere I would have used parmesean cheese in the past. I love it on popcorn - one of my favorite snacks these days.

Also, you need to make the "no cheese" sauce. You can add it to pasta and veggies or with nachos etc.

I often sprinkle a little bit on the birthday cards I send to people. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback too. Although there are a few die hards who've demanded that I go back to using parmesan.

You can also use it instead of confetti at weddings.

I apppreciate it !

For those who might travel this way one day or checking in from a different part of the universe -
'Nutritional' yeast in New Zealand is called 'Savory' yeast. The Red Star brand is not available however, there is now one brand imported from Australia that has Vit B12 added. Yahoo!
