what do you say when people ask what you eat?

I've been vegan since March '09 and still need help with this one. What can you say quickly when someone asks you that silly ol' question........"What do you eat"? or "Where do you get your protein"? Wink

I tell them everything but meat and dairy and that I get protein from vegetables and soy. Laughing

"I eat anything I want to eat, I just don't want to eat animals."

"I get vegetable protein from vegetables, grains, beans and nuts."

I always rattle off what I had for dinner so far this week.

Quizical Person: "Vegan? As in, you eat no animal products? What do you eat?!"

Me: "Well, Monday I had baja black-bean tacos, Tuesday I had spinach and rice enchelladas, Wednesday I had chili and cornbread, Thursday was stuffed green peppers, and tonight I am going to have phad thai. What do you eat?"

Quizical Person, "Wow. Well, I eat the normal stuff I suppose..."

Me: "Yeah, me too."

Quizical Person: "where do you get your protien?"

Me: "Greens and beans."

Quizical Person: "That can't be enough to build muscle.."

Me: "Don't tell the elephants...LOL. Actually, if you compare the amino acid profile of spinache to chicken, you will see they are an almost identical protein profile gram for gram. How do you suppose "meat" got all that protein? By eating greens of course."

LOL Glad you liked that CityKitty.

It is really a simple logic problem.
Anyone who has seen a grass-fed buffalo, and stood in awe at the rippling chords of muscle working just under that drum tight skin KNOWS deep down that there is plenty of powerful nutrition in greens.

After my response to their protein question, I sometimes ask them where they are getting their fiber.

what do I eat??? anything that didnt have a face...(or doesnt come from something that had a face)...anything that didnt have to be slaughtered, or didnt involve an animal's suffering or being restrained in any way...usually the first response is enough..also when they ask about protein, I ask about fiber (do they get enough), cholesterol (do they get too much)...etc...that also usually quiets people right down. Those who are watching what they eat (like vegans) are GENERALLY more knowledgeable about what they are and are not ingesting.. ask a carnivore how many grams of protein they are eating daily...and then after they cannot answer that ask them how many grams are NEEDED by a healthy adult daily, then ask about saturated fats, etc...without having to go into a whole big explanation, just asking those questions back usually ends the drill of questions you get. And I am always very polite, soft spoken and humble when engaging in these conversations...no need to turn people off to vegans!

Protein is a non-issue. By eating a healthy vegan diet, we get all the protein we need. I don't believe that anybody has been diagnosed as protein deficient. Most Americans get way too much protein.
