WHAT ABOUT BREAD?!

hi Im from Liverpool England and love this forum! Its been so helpful but I was just wondering how bread fits in to the plan? As its a processed food is wholemeal ok to eat? As it contains added fat should we just leave it out? If its ok how many slices a day? Sorry about all the questions just want to do it right! Also is wholewheat pasta ok to eat in unlimited amounts like other grains?

Hi, I know that Hovis wholemeal is vegan, it is one of the few that actually states it on the packet. Not sure of the fat content though. Hope this helps. Laurie (Coventry, England)

There are some wonderful grainy loaves that are the real deal - I've managed to find big wheels of excellent bread that only has wholegrain flour, water, and salt! No added fat (yes that's what you're looking for), no white flour, and the like. Here we can also get sprouted grain bread that is excellent. Other things to keep in mind are that bread is high in caloric density. This means higher calories per lb than, say, cooked brown rice or whole wheat grains. Plus, the grain has been disrupted, increasing caloric load effect. So, if weight is an issue, this should be kept in mind. One way to help budge the scale is to stick with the least altered possible when it comes to grains. Less flour, more whole grains. Make sense? Whole grains should predominate in a health-building diet, and depending one weight issues, wiggle with the bread. There are other considerations, such as trigylcerides, but that's another topic! Unless it's pita bread or something similar isn't all loaf type bread made with eggs? I always thought for that reason that it was not vegan.

I make all of the bread we eat in my house and there are lots of types of bread that don't have eggs in them. There are, however, a lot that have milk in them. Any French or Italian type bread shouldn't have eggs or milk (though not whole grain) - also, sourdough, rye, pumpernickel. ETA: I think Ezekiel bread is vegan, too. It's usually in the refrigerated section of the grocery store.

I was delightfully surprised to find that the Italian bread served at Maggiano is vegan. I told the waiter I was vegan and asked him about certain pastas and sauces (some pastas have eggs and several sauces have anchovies). He sent the chef out to our table who was able to confirm the whole wheat pasta is vegan, and created a special sauce just for me and threw in a bunch of added veggies. Then he told me the bread had no eggs or milk. The dinner was fabulous! At the end, the hostess came over and told us she wanted to buy us dessert because of something kind my husband had said when she seated us. None of their desserts are vegan, so the waiter brought me a wonderful bowl filled with bananas, strawberries, blueberries, and apples — all fresh fruits they have on hand for other dishes. Easily one of the best meals I've ever eaten out. Kathi

Bread, That is my big complaint for the week. I guess I thought when they said we could eat whole grain bread, they meant vegan. Well, I have been eating, I think, whole grain, double fiber thins. But anytime I eat any kind of whole grain bread, I get high sugars, cloudy head, weakness. And NO weight loss. I gave it up for one day, yesterday, and dropped 3 ps this morning. I woke up feeling great, no Blood Sugar problems. I am sticking to my grain as oatmeal until this weight comes off. kc
