More on my Sister Judy
Posted Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 11:58 AM
To answer your question, Marcie, all I did to get Judy on board was to tell her how much weight I have lost and how low my A1C is now. (and, being the "big sister" I had to remind her of the dangerous side effects of diabetes). She is having so much fun trying the recipes - she calls me three times a day from Washington State - I live in Texas - to tell me about things she has found and to ask questions. She told me she was getting weak and then went on to say she skips lunch because she didn't want to cook for lunch since she cooks for breakfast and dinner. When I talked to her about what she could eat without cooking (I have been on this over 2 months without cooking one recipe) - if she didn't want to eat leftovers - she was stunned by her options - she thought she MUST eat the recipe foods only - she admitted she didn't read the book - only the recipes. We laughed together. I think she will get over this weakness when she isn't starving herself all day - which of course is NOT good for her blood sugar levels. Thanks for your interest in my baby sister and I will keep you all posted on her progress. I have given her your encouragement and will continue to do so. Today one of the young women I work with asked if she could borrow my book because she wants to lose weight as I have. I gave her the book! Cheers to all.

Judy - I know it seems strange, but you can eat all you want of the good foods. I've lost 20 lbs and the food just taste better and better.

I NEVER let myself get too hungry, it's just a set up to over eat. If I feel hungry, I eat something. Baby carrots, apple, celery, sliced tomatoes, SOMETHING.

Jasmine, Which of the books are you talking about and I don't like to cook at lunch either would you share what you've been eating? It might help me to stay on track. I get hungry too and then go crazy food stuffing. I like the recipes but don't want to do that at lunch. Too much clean up. Thanks.

Marcia, I spoke with Judy this morning and she said to tell all that she is struggling. She just "had to have burger" in her spagetti sauce last night and then she ate an entire bag of M & M's. I encouraged her and she said she would continue trying - she likes the food but gets that lonely "I need comfort" eating. I wish you all could contact her for encouragement but she isn't on email - Bummer! I will pass any thought you have for her. Let us kept rooting for her. Be Happy! SMILES to all!

Boca Burger crumbles are GREAT in spaghetti sauce. I have made spaghetti for omnivores that don't even realize they aren't eating a real animal.

Oh dear, it sounds like she needs support close by. I relied on the blog for support and it really helped me knowing everyone elses struggle. I felt I wasn't alone. But this comfort food thing is hard to kick. I read somewhere that the longer you eat healthy the more you do not get cravings for the bad stuff. I've noticed I don't crave sweet rolls and cake like I did. This is my first summer eating vegan and I'm still having trouble with ice cream though. So I've got to find a substitute - maybe soy. If she can find something to substitute for her cravings, like Wild4stars suggested with the Boca Burgers, and keep it on hand. Good Luck to your sister.

Wild4Stars, Good suggestion on the Boca Burger crumbles with spaghetti sauce. Also, on the spaghetti sauce, I added in some V8 juice, the low sugar, to try and kick it up a notch. It was tasty. I'll try the crumbles of Boca Burger. EJ

Uniquebuy - Thanks for the info on "ice cream". My grocery store carries it, so I'll check it out next time I go. I tryed blending strawberries and some rice milk and a frozen banana together then froze it. It was hard as a rock. It tasted OK, but not something I'd make again. I did try some soy milk ice cream - pecan. That was good, but it had egg whites in it. It has been so hot and cardinals had made a nest in the shrub over the air-conditioner so I haven't wanted to turn on the air and disturb them. So I've been really graving anything cold.
