How many calories for breakfast

I just started using Vega Complete Whole Food Health Optimizer (vanilla chai flavor) I like it, although it's a bit on the sweet side. Read the label and 2 scoops is 580 calories. (mixed with water) Does that seems like a lot of calories? It's very filling.

Yes - that's a lot of calories if you are using this as a supplemental drink and not a meal replacement or if you don't follow a rigorous exercise program. Vega, remember, was created by a professional triathlete who has to work hard to get all the calories he needs on a very intense training schedule. And while it is a super nutrient-dense shake with awesome ingredients, I would consider if it's something you need on a daily basis with your lifestyle.

I do use it for breakfast so it is a meal replacement. Now way am I on Brendan level, but I do ride my bicycle to and from work on a very hilly route. I'm not trying to lose weight.

You are probably fine. As a total replacement, it's pretty good!

Susan you look fit. What do you eat for breakfast?

Well thanks for the unsolicited kind comment. I love some kind of cereal in the morning. I mix up a variety of cold ones (brands that don't add sugar but do have loads of fiber), add fruit and almond milk. In the winter, I eat more oatmeal, also with fruit and almond milk. Boring? I've been known to scramble a tofu on the weekend or whip up some buckwheat pancakes.

I'm looking forward to this Kickstart, which will be my first. My most usual breakfast is half a cup of uncooked rolled oats, soaked in a cup of mixed soy & almond milk. It soaks for half an hour or 45 minutes while I do morning exercises, then I add fruit and it's done.

Though I've looked around for other people who do this, I can only find people who either cook their oats or soak them overnight. I wonder if the shorter soaking affects the nutrition or glycemic index? It's a very satisfying breakfast, and I like the texture better than cooked oatmeal.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

thanks,
Sarah

It's possible that more soaking increases the glycemic index as well as some of the nutrient availability. Draining the liquid it soaked in would also influence nutrient content as some of the water soluble vitamins would leave with the liquid that is discarded. Sounds like you are consuming that nutrient-rich liquid, so that's not a concern here. Either way, I wouldn't worry too much about these slight variabilities. Your breakfast is super healthful and hard to beat.

I have soaked raw steel cut oats overnight in water with figs, then food processed. It's really yummy. But it would be hard to eat steel cut oats after soaking for only 45 minutes.

I have eaten oatmeal soaked in applesauce with cinnamon and raisins. Turns out good. I usually let it soak about an hour I guess. I may try the steel cut oats soaked overnight.

These both sound great -- thank you! I'll try the steel cut oats sometime too...

I tried soaking steel cut oats overnight. they were still very hard? crunchy? well it didn't seem like their texture changed very much. 1/2 cup of oats to a cup of soy milk.

They may still be hard. I throw mine in the food processor after soaking. That takes care of that problem!

Susan what a great idea! I ate them anyway, I was rushing out the door to go on a hike.
