News story today - thoughts?
Posted Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 12:46 PM

"What causes people to eat not just a little bit of fat in one sitting, but a lot? A new study says it's the marijuana-like chemicals in the body.

Endocannabinoids are the culprit behind the urge to have one more potato chip, and then another and another. So say researchers at UC Irvine, whose study will appear this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Fat-eating rats, they found, produced the endocannabinoids in their guts. Sugar- and protein-eating rats did not.

The significance of this, the researchers say, is that fat triggers a signal that goes from the brain to a bundle of nerves in the intestines. And this, they speculate, releases digestive chemicals linked to hunger, leading to more eating.

The practical take-away from this is that it could lead to medication that blocks endocannabinoid production and better control in eating."

The two thoughts that popped into my head were:
'Ah, so that's where the munchies come from!' and "Hhow about instead of developing a medication, we spend the money on making good quality, fresh, low fat, fiber rich foods more readily available?"

Your thoughts?

Yes to your ideas! But it won't happen. I hate to be a dooms day Gus but I have wondered this sort of thing for many years. The "food-money people" want more $$ and the pharmaceutical companies....are worst!
I thank you for sharing this and now know why after I have eaten a fatty meal I still want more.
I'm on a downer today....can you tell?

I suppose there may be some folks who over-produce these chemicals the way some folks over-produce cholesterol (even if all they eat is lettuce) so meds might be useful in that regard. But, still, there really needs to be a big turn around in working with changing behaviors/eating habits FIRST. Then, if that doesn't fully address a situation, try meds.

It's like the commercials that make me crazy that say "take our pills and lose weight WITHOUT changing how you eat" - argh!!

Of course, there's another aspect to it which is the idea of "food deserts" (not desserts LOL) - areas where affordable fresh food is readily available. In some urban areas, there aren't even accessible grocery stores. I just read a story in today's paper about Wholesome Wave, an organization which provides funding to allow food stamp recipients to afford fresh, farmer's market foods which would often be totally above budget.

That is some good news. I know there are those farm groups that are local and you can buy into them. Now that I have more time I plan to do that. It is all organic and lower because you sign up for shares...kinda.
My local is called "Sandy's Farms", something like that.
Have you hear of those?

It is very hard to cut fats and sweets I think. A long time ago I did the M. Henner and cutting out fats and sweets was so hard but after I did I didn't crave them. I did the same with meat. Almost vegan again after a laps in judgment. Smile

Yes, there are a bunch of CSAs here in CT and I know a few folks in various places (both in CT and elsewhere) who run CSAs. We considered it but for most of them you have to 'buy in' around January (so they know how to plan and budget for planting time) and we just couldn't swing it financially. So, we go to the farmer's markets when we can, buy local at the grocery store when we can (we've got two chains in the area that specifically mark where local produce comes from by the name and town of the producing farm), buy from the co-op market (which is as much local and organic as they can get - obviously some things will never be 'local' to this area due to climate/growing season and conditions) and generally try to buy things seasonally, locally, organically as much as we can while balancing the budget. Part of the decision making is how often/how much we're eating a particular thing - if it's something we have twice per year, we might go ahead and get "whatever" while something we eat multiple times per week we get very specific (like buying organic wheatberries and black beans).

Interesting topic guys.

I just can't see people agreeing to take a medication that stops them from eating fatty foods. If you enjoy eating certain foods, you wanna have the pleasure of eating them don't you ??

It's like if you could take a pill that gives you the power to know how a film's gonna end, so that you don't need to watch it all the way through, would you take it ??

Has someone said this already ??

The pill wouldn't stop them from eating the fatty foods. Rather, they could eat all the fatty foods they wanted without dealing with the consequences (overeating, for example, in this case).

Kind of like my FIL - rather than change how he ate, he just took more and more medication.

People are doing this all the time now. They eat bacon and eggs for breakfast and take cholesterol lowering drugs. They live a couch potato life eating chips and junk in front of the TV and take pills to lower their blood pressure.

It's a drug company's fantasy! Yet another drug to let people live a lazy life spiked with feeding frenzies and still live in the fantasy that taking a few pills will make them "healthy."

Food and drug companies are getting rich and our "health care" system is going broke.

Seems so simple to me, yet others don't see it???

It made hubby a little nutsy to see what his dad was doing - and that was part of the impetus for the direction we've taken over the past several years from couch potato fast food eaters to more active plant based eaters. Our goal is to keep any needed medication to a minimum.

I will be 60 in December and people simply do not believe that I am not on ANY drugs. Even when I go to a new doctor they tell me "Bring the list of drugs you're on." LIST!?! Like it's juse ASSUMED at my age I must be on drugs. When I come without a list, they simply don't believe me. And I'm only 59! Once I hit medicare age I'm sure it will get worse. After all, the government is going to pay for it so why not put me on all the drugs I can handle?

I don't want to be a guinea pig for the drug companies!
Ditto the food companies with all their chemicals and genetic modifications.

Wild Stars,

Isn't it about time you put up a proper picture of yourself, instead of hiding behind some starry logo.

Of course the other ridiculous thing is that they've come to so many wrong conclusions from transposing rat data to humans, and yet they still continue to use rats. What's the definition of insanity again ??

I can't put up stars or photos at this point. Not sure what's wrong. At least I got rid of the big black box.

My star is back! Love it. Maybe I'll figure out a way to put my photo in there. Right now I don't want to mess with success.
