getting the munchies
Posted Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 9:14 PM

What are people doing when they are feeling hungry after or between meals, or late at night? Any good ideas for snacks? (Besides fruit, which usually doesn't do it for me!) Thanks!

Air-popped popcorn - lots! Boil some frozen edamame (takes 3 minutes). If REALLY late at night? I brush my teeth, go to bed, and dream of a big breakfast.

baby carrots
whole wheat pitas with hummus or salsa (or hummus AND salsa)
raw nuts
pop corn (no butter)
toasted garbanzo beans with seasoning
Snyder's Organic Oat Bran Pretzels
Soy nuts
oven baked french "fries"
oven baked sweet potato "fries"
Kashi Go Lean Crunch (it's a breakfast cereal but also a great snack eaten dry)

Hope that helps, if I had more time I could probably think of some more but maybe these will give you some other ideas!

SUSAN ~ Brush your teeth and go to bed. SUCH A GREAT ONE!! Once I brush my teeth I don't want anything.

I stay up very late, so I tend to eat later.

How do you toast chick peas?

Also, I have a sweet tooth, rather than a salt tooth, so any ideas that are on the sweeter side will be welcome!

OMG! Toasted Chickpeas!

I didn't know other people did that. I learned that from some cats at the Needmore commune.

Drain a can of chickpeas. While they are still wet, toss them in some chili powder and or garlic powder.

Bake at 420 degrees..(they baked everything at 420 at Needmore) for half an hour or until brown and crunchy.

Count to 50, drink a glass of water, then go outside and look at the stars. Get your mind off your stomach. You'll be surprised at how quickly your mind gets itself off food. Then go to bed. Sorry to give you such crap advice, but it works. You'll feel so much better in the morning for having resisted.

Good advice and if I was in Australia, I would do that all the time, even when not hungry! But here in New York, not only is it 19 degrees windchill; if you see even one star in the sky, that is an achievement. Smile But I understand your general suggestion and thanks. Wink

Oh to be in the Southern Hemisphere right now. I'm envious. And I like this chicpea recipe. Sounds great!

Air popped popcorn, or microwave popcorn (like Paul Newman's) that has no dairy products in it. Then, melt a little bit of Earth Balance spread in the microwave, put some sea salt in it and then mix it in with the popcorn. It's YUMMY!

Frozen berries (you can get big bags of them at Costco), microwaved for about 45 seconds, then mix chopped raw pecans into the berries (you can get big bags of raw pecans at Costco too). It's yummy and will take care of any cravings for sweet you might have.

Carrot and celery sticks dipped into hummus.

Salsa and low fat tortilla chips.

If your body is telling you it's hungry, eat something! Just make it smart food. I usually go with a small bowl of low fat cereal with rice milk when the late nigh munchies strike!

The babies (our dogs I mean) LOVE air-popped popcorn night. They line up in front of the couch patiently waiting for one of us to toss 'em a round. I have NEVER tried nutritional yeast flakes on it before, but having read it here, I can't wait for Friday.

Smile a nickname for nutritional yeast. Let's face it, it needs one!
