The Biggest Loser

Did anyone catch last night's season opener? Yowza! I was a bit disturbed by making the contestants weigh in in front of their families and friends. The "exhibitionist" parts of the show I really dislike. And the 26.2 bike ride was ridiculous in my opinion (although most made it...I wonder if they could walk the next day?) I'd love to see a season where the contestants eat vegan and exercise moderately and see how that measures up to 6-8 hours of intense workouts they do now for fat loss.

I often wondered why the haven't promoted a more plant based diet, since both trainers live it.

Yes, the show has gone more extreme each season, but I guess the producers feel that's what they need to do to keep up with all of the Reality TV. Sad to see that Americans are getting fatter and fatter. A weight loss of 30 lbs in a week?? That's obscene! I also wonder how those contestants can even walk up to the scale to weigh in after a week of incredibly strenuous and extreme exercise- I did a gentle DVD workout for 2 days and was so sore I could barely move! I do like to catch the show, though, for its more sensitive moments especially. It can be very motivational!

I had never seen the show before last night and I was sort of appalled. Sending people home after getting their hopes up that they would have intense help in finally getting healthier? Ugh! Millions of overweight people watching and no tips on healthy eating or exercise? I was really disappointed. I don't know that I will watch again.

Yea Jen that is my biggest problem with the show they all show up and the show flys them there and then the first week they send someone home. That was bad I sure hope they get support from the show for that month. I guess they would complain if they didn;t. It will be interesting to see how the month works out for the ones sent home. Cathy

I see the show as demonstrating the power of motivation. Obtain public commitments; dangle big prize money; scatter weekly incentives and prizes; eliminate someone every week. It all adds up to extreme motivation for the ones left on the show. Then add prize money and a final public weigh-in for the ones kicked out to keep them motivated at home during the run of the show. The trainers seem to try their best to instill the concept of permanent changes, but even with their intense counseling, many of the past contestants pack the pounds back on after the shows powerful incentives are gone. To be long term successful, each contestant must ultimately find his (her) own motivation for continued success.

I have been a fan for several seasons, although in the past I always watched with a big ol' bowl of (air-popped) popcorn...smothered in Becel (of course). Not last night though...a few whole grain tortilla chips with salsa. (and I do mean a few...) It is a "game" and there has to be a winner and losers. The players use strategy to stay on the ranch and the ones who have to leave... I do believe they get support because they often return to the finale looking mighty fit! I do think it is totally unnecessary to make them weigh in in sports bras and bare chests/bellies. The numbers on the scales speak for themselves. We don't need to see the stretch marks and loose skin for heaven's sake.

I cried along with the contestants through alot of the show. It surprised me that I was so emotional along with them. But it really hit home to me. I have to lose 90 pounds and I just feel so overwhelmed about it all. And, like most of the above posts, I was shocked about the 26.2 miles on a stationary bike? I could never have made that in the condition I am in; how the heck did the rest of them do it? Hats off to them I say. But I was surprised that they were able to move and walk. I did 15 minutes on the bike Sunday and my calves were killing me on Monday. How are they doing it? It seems surreal to me. I generally like to watch the show; however, lately it has been way to dramatic and nutty at times. I want to know how these people can get time away from work for so long? I would lose my job if I did that!
