Info on Veganism????

Does anyone know of any good books or websites to learn more about the benefits of a vegan diet? I know it's healthy but I want to educate myself a bit more about it.

I'm in the middle of "The China Study" by Dr. T. Colin Campbell. The best in current science by a research scientist. It's hard to listen to the parts about the animal studies, so I try to focus on the results of those studies. Never again will any animal protein cross my lips!

Dr. John McDougall has a great program, too. The newsletters are great, and lots of recipes developed by his wife, Mary, are on NutritionMD (the sister site of the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart.) You can find his books & DVDs on his website.

I checked out and read the first 4 chapters of The China Study from my school library. I had to turn it back in because the campus was closed for the holidays. Although I was thinking about just buying the book from amazon....and I'll check out the website for Dr. McDougall thank you!!!! : )

"Becoming Vegan" is a great resource for nutrients and information.

I hate to admit it but "Skinny Bitch" was a funnier read and more main stream.

If you go to any book seller site you will find plenty ( way too many sometimes), if your live near Harrisburg, PA you can borrow a few of the "too many" from my ever growing library. Faith

i love Becoming Vegan too! it's written by two RDs who wrote the American Dietetic Associations position paper on vegetarianism. which is to say, they know their stuff and can tell you allllllll about where you get your protein.

it's a great reference, especially if family is asking pesky questions.

and there are sections on how best to shape your diet for all stages of life, including pregnancy, senior years, etc.

i have seen it in many bookstores and libraries, but you can also order it from amazon. here is the book's website: http://www.nutrispeak.com/becomingvegan.htm

i've purchased 4 copies so far, to share. Smile

I'm glad someone mentioned Skinny Bitch. This was not the type of book I would normally pick up, but for some reason, I took it out of the library about a year ago. I wasn't ever a big meat eater anyway, but after reading it, I told my husband I would never buy or cook meat again. (He can cook, so it's not like I left him to starve.) He said nothing in the book would ever get him off meat. I gave it to him, he read the two nastiest chapters (one about slaughterhouses, I can't remember what the other one was), and we haven't bought or cooked meat since. I gave it to my two daughters to read, and they were on board, too (the third daughter was already vegetarian).

If I remember right, there were some recipes and meal plans in it, but to me it was more persuasive about changing to a vegetarian lifestyle than a very good guide once I made the decision.

I try not to impose my opinion of eating meat on other people, but if someone really insists on knowing why I made the decision, I always refer them to that book. It's hard to be an animal lover and not be disturbed by it.

The number of great books and websites on being vegan increases every day. How about magazines as another good source of information. When one lands in your mailbox, you are forcefully reminded of your commitment to a plant-based diet.

VegNews is my favorite US magazine. Vegan Voice (veganic.net) is an Australian publication with inspiring heartfelt stories that will ramp up your motivation each time you read it. Subscription cost to the US is quite reasonable (about $38 US when I subscribed) and the Australian accent practically leaps off the page.
