Different types of brown rice?
Posted Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 8:22 AM
It seems I am using a lot of brown rice. That's fine; i like it. I am wondering if there is one type of brown rice i would use if i wanted to add & mix to a recipe and not really see it.. and another i would use for say the brown rice pudding breakfast that would stay fimer when cooked. If there was a brown rice that would stay in the form or a grain with the firmness of reg rice pudding that would be great. I always use the long cooking rice. So are there different types that turn out different consistancies?

Typically, short grain rice is not as "seperate", that is, it tends to be more "gummy" and lends itself to recipes that need that. Back when I used rice for the crust to my quiche, I would use short grain rice and pat it down against the pie tin. Then I would pour in my quiche mixture. No more quiche...Elizabeth

That's correct – the shorter the grain, the mushier the rice. Short grain = super mush. Medium grain = medium mush. Long grain = least mush. Brown Basmati Rice = no mush at all. There are also several Brown & Wild Rice blends that are good – Lundberg makes a really good one.

That's my favorite. I order it by the case. They have it in bulk in Gainesville Florida, but that's about a hundred miles round trip....Elizabeth

we love brown basmati - I love the popcorn-y smell of it when it's cooking. --Deb
