control how much I eat???
Posted Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 11:52 AM

I am wondering if I need to control how much I eat at each deal??? I had gestational diabetes (clear now), and nutritionist and doctor taught me to count how much carb I could have (15g for breakfast, 45- 60 g for lunch and dinner, and 15g for 3 snacks in between meal)...

Now, gestational diabetes is clear and gone...and I am breastfeeding...

I eat lots veggies, beans, whole wheat bread, and fruits on each meal, a lots till I feel satisfied....Am I eating right??? (brainwashed counting carb during my pregnancy...looks like it is way too much)...

really don't need to worry portion/size, and counting carb???

Hi Wen,
The Kickstart team encourages you to eat until satisfied, but not stuffed. If you have a history of diabetes, I highly recommend Dr. Barnard's book about reversing diabetes. You're at an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes now, so you want to watch your intake of added fats and high-glycemic carbs. http://www.pcrm.org/shop/neal/diabetes.html

Personally, I try to avoid most flour-based grains, preferring to eat grains in their whole state – eating whole cooked barley, quinoa, brown rice, etc., versus whole wheat bread. But I *love* the Ezekiel brand sprouted grain products. Have you tried them? They're awesome! Very Happy

I was diabetic, on metformin, before becoming vegetarian. I deliberately didn't count carbs, but avoided foods high on the glycemic index and then ate till satisfied, trying to relearn hunger/satisfaction after years of dieting. My A1C on follow up after two months was 5.4! My doctor said, "whatever you're doing, keep it up!" I'm still having regular follow up visits, but for me, this plan has worked well.
