AN UNLIKELY VEGAN
Posted Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 8:08 PM
AN UNLIKELY VEGAN Hi, my name is Madeline. This is my first time, and I am very excited about it. Icarroll and I are making a documentary based on this experience. The documentary is actually about Irene (icarroll), and I am making it, but I am also following the program! I would like to keep you all informed of how we are doing with the documentary, and I (and Irene) will do that on this topic. I am also very excited about participating in other topics on this forum, and about becoming vegan. We have already done a couple of shoots, including Irene's first consultation with a Chinese medicine practitioner (who is actually a member of PCRM even though we are on a small island on the east coast of Canada). We have also taped Irene going grocery shopping, and Irene getting a massage. This weekend we tape a cooking session, based on the meal plan, and we start following Irene daily. We have been busy on the community participation part of this project, and we have had great success. Many local businesses are supporting us. One restaurant is having a special VEGAN NIGHT, where we will be taping, and they say they will consider doing this regularly. This is quite a success in a city of only 25,000 people. If you would like to follow us more closely, our facebook page for the project is http://www.facebook.com/an.unlikely.vegan Good luck to everyone. - madeline

"Vegan" protein powders and the like
Posted Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 1:52 PM
I have a concern which I would like to air here, and get some advise. We are building momentum for our documentary, and being contacted by representatives from all kinds of remedies and products claiming to be "vegan". Some of these products might be quite legitimate, but I tend to be more than a little weary of powdered "real" food. Some products are even pushing 30 day programs with community support, and using words like "real" food, "whole food health optimizers", and "health bars". I don't want to be too extremely cynical, nor do I want Irene (icarrol) to fall to false claims. Could I have some opinions on this from my community please... much appreciated.

I'd avoid any of that - the point of the kickstart is using as little processed food as possible but using lots of fresh whole fruits, veggies, grains, beans/legumes. You don't need a 'program' or "advertising" to go to the grocery store produce aisle. The only folks I might even consider including in something like this are local farms and farmer's markets, local veg*n restaurants if there are any (like the one you mentioned), that sort of stuff. --Deb R

Thank you Deb R. I agree with you 100%. I didn't want to push Irene without some input from a broader community, and was trusting that what you said is the kind of thing she will hear here. She probably can't check in here until this evening... what do you think Irene, and others?

I agree with Deb. Here in New England we are lucky to have many farm stands and farmers markets available. I am new to the vegan concept, but always support the local farmer through the season for fresh fruits, vegetables and other items. Looking forward to learning more in this 21 day vegan lifestyle journey... You have a beautiful area in Cape Brenton, best wishes with your documentary!

The good thing is that as more people are looking local (the locavore movement/idea), farmer's markets are popping up pretty much within a fairly short drive of anywhere. Whether they're looking for fruits and veggies or locally raised meat/eggs/dairy, it's out there. If I had nothing else to do on a whole weekend (like that'll ever happen :lol , I could stop in at probably half a dozen farmer's markets within 20 minutes of my house, and even more if I wandered farther afield. And, in an interesting trend, some are finding indoor sites to continue through the winter (root veggies, dairy/eggs/meat, hydroponic or hot house veggies, 'cellared' fruit like apples, etc). --Deb R

Had a thought based on a conversation with hubby the other day: without showing any 'brand names' (so you don't get into trouble) it might be interesting to compare cost, time, taste, nutritional info for similar foods/meals - one prepared from scratch (as much as possible - eg. I don't know anyone who makes their own nutritional yeast) and one using prepared vegan foods. For instance, how much does it cost to buy a container of hummus, what are the ingredients, what is the nutritional info VS. cooking up some dried chickpeas, smashing them, adding seasonings to your taste. Odds are good there'd be less salt, for one. Add in the 'green' factor - how much trash is involved in using packaged foods vs. cooking from ingredients. --Deb R

Hummus would be a good example for comparing prepared and made from scratch, and it is on the menu this week. We are doing a cook-fest taping tomorrow, I'll try to fit that in! I'll check the price of the prepared stuff at the local big chain store later today. Thanks for a good idea Deb R.

We conducted our first key interview with Irene today. We had planned to do a cook-fest too, but Irene was feeling very ill with a very big headache. She was such a trooper that she let me shine video lights at her for an hour, with a migraine, because she knew that I wanted to capture her state early on in the process. In exchange I did the cook-fest at my place later. I only made the new recipes that she had already practiced, I just wanted to be sure that she could start the week with a few things already prepared. THANK YOU IRENE! You can see a few photos of the interview set-up, as well as a grab from camera 1 and camera 2, on our facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=24376&id=112305448844747 Irene has been "cleaning herself out" in preparation for this Kickstart. She has not had sugar for two weeks, and has been changing her diet. I hope that she has the energy to come onto this discussion forum in the coming days, to get the great support that can be found here.

If she's used to soft drinks and coffee/tea with caffeine, she may be experiencing a caffeine withdrawal headache. They can be really NASTY. Sometimes, if there are no other health issues involved, taking a *regular* aspirin (as opposed to ibuprofen et al) can help - it contains a small amount of caffeine as well as analgesic. --Deb R

Happy to say that the headache is finally gone! Thanks for the good information and helpful hints. Soft drinks have never been part of my diet (don't care for them) but coffee is. However, I haven't given it up yet so it's likely not caffeine withdrawal. It could be sugar withdrawal, as I've cut back almost to elimination and chocolate was one of my food groups! Regular migraines are normal. Perhaps one of the great benefits to eating well and taking better care of myself will be to lose the migraines altogether!

That's giving the 21 day kickstart an unfair advantage (for the documentary -- not your body)doing a "clean-out" of sugar before starting! Besides, some of these recipes have sugar in them ---- why do that?

The reason for eliminating sugar is twofold and has nothing to do with an unfair advantage to anyone. It has everything to do with the migraines and the process of eliminating foods to find out what is making them occur more often. It has to be something I've been eating a lot of or more of in the past few months and I suspected sugar to be the culprit, as stress has been increased lately and my usual response to stress is to eat things that contain sugar. Migraines are often triggered by certain foods such as chocolate and other things with sugar. Even though many of the recipes in the 21 day kickstart have sugar in them, I will substitute it with stevia in a continued effort to avoid the migraines. They are not pleasant, as I'm sure you know, and I'll do whatever is necessary to avoid them.

icarroll, I had chronic migraines (even on a vegan diet), and mine turned out to be due to severe Vitamin D deficiency. Since I live right around the Mason-Dixon line, I'm in the part of the country that is too far north to even make Vitamin D for many months of the year. I took a prescription dose of Vit D for 6 weeks (50,000 IU 3 times per week) then went down to 4800 IU per day. Over 2 years later, and I hardly get any migraines now. Good luck!

Wow, what a night. Today was the first day of the PCRM 21 Day Vegan Kickstart, and the first public taping for AN UNLIKELY VEGAN. We have posted photos on Facebook, and I hope you take a look at them as they capture some of the feeling in the room at Flavor this evening. Bev Niven’s wonderful stills can be seen here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?fbid=16769929... A few stills grabbed from the video cameras can be seen here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?fbid=12273510... All in all it was a very good official kick-off to the Kickstart, and to the production of AN UNLIKELY VEGAN

Taping and Broadcasting at the same time!
Posted Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Today we had an opportunity to tape and broadcast at the same time. We went out for healthy smoothies for breakfast. Scott Morrison, the owner of Flavor in downtown Sydney, let us into his kitchen and explained what he uses in his healthy smoothies, and why he has these smoothies on his regular menu. We also took the opportunity to share this training with the entire listenership of The EAGLE, a local FM radio station, who was in attendance at the shoot, and broadcasted it live. Both Irene, our UNLIKELY VEGAN, and Madeline, our producer/director/editor, were interviewed on air. Scott also explained how to make smoothies for the entire island to hear. If you would like to see the full Facebook album from this morning’s shoot, check it out here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?fbid=123248267750465&id=112305448844747&aid=24848 - madeline
